Blackburn offers one-on-one, non-clinical mentoring that employee assistance program teams can share as a referral option for two groups: early-career employees struggling with the routine of a first job, and members worried about a young adult son or daughter who is stuck. It sits alongside EAP counseling, never in place of it, and the member always chooses whether to reach out.
Who this page is for
This page is for EAP account managers, intake and care coordinators, and counselors who field requests that are not clinical but still matter to members, such as:
- A new graduate employee who is overwhelmed by the basics of working life: routine, sleep, money and follow-through.
- A parent whose 22-year-old has been home for a year with no job, classes or plan.
- A young adult dependent who left college and is drifting.
- A member whose counseling sessions have ended but who wants practical structure to keep going.
Employers considering a direct arrangement can read our page for employers. Other referring professionals can see for professionals.
What mentoring is, and what it is not
- It is: one dedicated mentor working on goals the client chooses, broken into weekly steps, with sessions weekly or several times a week and text and phone contact between sessions.
- It is not: counseling, therapy, assessment or crisis support. Mentors do not diagnose or treat, and do not give legal, medical or financial advice.
- It does not replace the EAP. Members with clinical concerns should use EAP counseling or another licensed professional first. Mentoring can follow or run alongside that care; see therapy and mentoring together.
If a member is in crisis, the EAP’s own crisis line or emergency services come first. In a crisis, call or text 988.
Two groups it tends to fit
Early-career employees
Employees in their first years of work who are struggling to build routines around a demanding job: sleep, money, time, relationships and the decisions of early adulthood. Mentors do not give technical career advice; the focus is follow-through and habits. See early career mentoring and the first 90 days in a new job.
Young adult dependents
Members often call about an adult child rather than themselves. Mentoring gives the young adult their own dedicated mentor, and with the young adult’s permission, parents get regular progress updates. See a mentor for an adult son or daughter and mentoring for young adults feeling stuck. For high school students, a parent or guardian is always involved.
What it looks like week to week
- Sessions of 60 minutes, weekly or several times a week.
- Video anywhere in the United States, scheduled in the client’s local time zone, or in person in Los Angeles.
- Mentoring is arranged in 30 day cycles.
- Goals reviewed and adjusted as the client’s situation changes; see how mentoring works.
How a referral works
- Share our details. An EAP counselor or coordinator passes on our contact information or the link to our five-minute assessment.
- The member or young adult reaches out. We never contact members on an EAP’s behalf; they decide whether to start.
- Free intro call. Our team reviews the assessment personally and sets up a short call to discuss goals, fit and rates.
- Matching. The client is matched with a mentor whose experience and style fit.
- Permission-based updates. If the client wants their EAP counselor kept informed, they agree exactly what is shared. Otherwise nothing is.
Fees and formal arrangements
We do not publish prices; rates are reviewed with each client on the free intro call. We do not describe any standing EAP contract here. If your organization wants to explore whether a more formal referral arrangement makes sense, call or email us and we can talk through what would work for your members.
Questions to ask any non-clinical referral option
- Is the service clearly non-clinical, and how does it hand clinical concerns back?
- How is consent handled before anything is shared with the EAP or family?
- How quickly can a member get started after reaching out?
- Can it serve members across states?
- How does it work with family members when the client is an adult?

Common questions
Is Blackburn mentoring a clinical service?
No. It is non-clinical, one-on-one mentoring focused on routine, goals and follow-through. Clinical concerns belong with EAP counseling or another licensed professional.
Can EAP counselors refer a member’s adult child?
Yes. The young adult becomes the client and decides whether to go ahead. With their permission, parents receive regular progress updates.
Do you have a set EAP rate or contract?
We do not publish prices or a standard EAP contract. Rates are reviewed on the free intro call, and organizations can contact us to discuss a referral arrangement.
Does the EAP receive updates?
Only if the client agrees, and only what they agree to share.
