Washington, DC and major metro areas
Washington, DC has its own page: online mentoring in Washington, DC. For a city or metro area, see the full list on online mentoring across the United States. In Los Angeles, mentoring and coaching can also happen in person: see mentoring in Los Angeles.
How online mentoring works across time zones
Every session is scheduled in your local time, whether you are on Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Alaska or Hawaii time. You pick times that fit school, practice or work, and the mentor works around them. Text and phone check-ins between sessions follow your day, not ours.
- Families split across states: a parent in one time zone and a student at college in another is common. Sessions follow the student’s schedule, and parent updates arrive in a way that works for the family.
- Daylight saving time: Hawaii and most of Arizona do not change their clocks, so the gap to other states shifts by an hour in spring and fall. Calendar invites in your local time keep this from causing missed sessions.
- Moves and travel: when a client moves, travels or starts college somewhere new, they keep the same mentor and simply update the time zone.

State education rules and where to read about them
States set many of the rules that shape a student’s path: graduation requirements, dual enrollment, state scholarships and in-state tuition. A mentor does not replace a school counselor on those questions, but helps a student keep track of deadlines and follow through on the plan. Our education rules by state guide explains what each state controls, alongside graduation requirements, state merit scholarships and regional tuition discounts.
Common questions
Can I work with a mentor if I do not live in Los Angeles?
Yes. Most clients meet their mentor by video from anywhere in the United States, with sessions scheduled in their own time zone.
Do you work with high school students in every state?
Yes, by video, and a parent or guardian is always involved: they can join the intro call, agree on goals and receive regular progress updates.
How do I get started?
Take the five-minute assessment. The team reviews it personally and sets up a free intro call, then matches you with a dedicated mentor.
What time zones do you schedule sessions in?
All of them in the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Sessions are always scheduled in the client’s local time.
What if my student goes to college in a different state?
The student keeps the same mentor. Sessions move to the student’s new time zone, and parent updates continue as agreed. See mentoring for the first year of college.
Is in-person mentoring available outside Los Angeles?
In-person sessions are available in Los Angeles. Everywhere else, mentoring happens by video, with the same dedicated mentor, weekly goals and check-ins.
Does a mentor know my state’s graduation or scholarship rules?
Mentors help students organize deadlines and requirements, but the school counselor and the state’s official sources are the authority. See education rules by state for where to look.
Can a family with a teen in one state and a parent in another both be involved?
Yes. Parents can join the intro call by video from anywhere and receive regular progress updates wherever they live.
