Recovery is one of the areas where mentoring makes the biggest difference. For people in recovery, a Blackburn mentor offers hands-on help turning sobriety into a working, meaningful life, with the structure and accountability that make progress last.
How mentoring supports recovery
Early recovery leaves a lot of open space: time that used to be filled by drinking or using, and life skills that may have slipped or never been learned. Without structure, that space can become a risk. Mentoring fills it with routine, purpose and a trusted person who notices when things start to drift.
- Building a steady routine for work, school, health and rest
- Staying connected to meetings, a sponsor and a recovery community
- Spotting early warning signs, such as isolation or missed commitments
- Planning ahead for high-risk situations, such as holidays and stressful days
- Rebuilding trust with family through follow-through
Working alongside your supports
Mentors are not therapists and they do not replace a sponsor. With your permission, they work alongside your therapist, case manager, sponsor, sober living staff and family so everyone is pulling in the same direction.
Part of a wider practice
Mentoring for people in recovery uses the same approach as all of our mentoring: a personal plan, regular sessions in person or by video, and steady contact in between. See one-on-one mentoring and accountability and recovery for more.

Questions about mentoring in recovery
Is a mentor the same as a sponsor?
No. A sponsor is a fellow member of a 12 Step program who guides you through the Steps. A mentor is a professional who focuses on practical life goals and works alongside your sponsor, not in place of one.
Do I need to live in sober living to work with a mentor?
No. Mentoring is available to people in sober living, people living independently and people outside Los Angeles by video.
Does mentoring replace treatment?
No. Mentoring works alongside treatment, therapy and a recovery program and helps clients stay connected to all of them.
