A city between the mountains and the river
Albuquerque stretches from the Sandia Mountains, which glow pink at sunset, down to the cottonwoods of the Rio Grande bosque. It is New Mexico’s largest city but often feels like a big small town. Every October, the Balloon Fiesta fills the sky; the rest of the year, life moves at an easier pace than in most metros its size.
That pace is part of the appeal. It can also make it easy for a young person to drift, especially after high school, when friends scatter and the next step is not obvious.
Science, film and the jobs in between
Albuquerque’s economy has a few distinct anchors. Sandia National Laboratories and Kirtland Air Force Base employ engineers, scientists and support staff, and nearby research and technical firms follow. Film and television production has grown into a real industry, with studios and crews working around the city. Health care, government and small business fill out the rest.
For young adults, that means paths that are not always visible from a classroom: technician roles, trades, production crew work, apprenticeships and internships. A mentor helps a young adult find and test those paths with practical steps:
- List three kinds of work that sound interesting, even vaguely.

- Review what you learned with your mentor and choose the next step.
Staying, leaving and coming back
For a family with deep roots in the area, a young adult’s decision to leave for school or work can carry real weight. Some young adults come back after time away and struggle to restart. For high school students and parents
Parents often look for a mentor when a teen is bright but disengaged, has fallen behind and never caught up, or is a senior with no plan for June. Scheduling in Mountain time
New Mexico is one hour ahead of our team. A 4 pm session after school in Albuquerque is 3 pm for the mentor, and evening slots work well for young adults with day jobs. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, on a weekly or monthly plan, and they continue when a family travels.
Where a mentor helps
A mentor is one consistent adult outside the family who keeps a weekly plan moving. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors. Do you meet clients in person in Albuquerque?
No. Albuquerque clients meet their mentor by video, with text and phone contact between sessions. In-person meetings are available in Los Angeles.
Can you work with families in Santa Fe too?
Yes. Anyone in New Mexico, or anywhere in the United States, can work with us online in local time.
