Confidence Coaching for Teens

Confidence coaching for teens is one-on-one help for a teenager to speak up, try new things, handle setbacks and stop letting fear of failure make their choices. Blackburn matches each teen with one dedicated mentor who sets small, real challenges with them each week and checks in between sessions, by video anywhere in the United States or in person in Los Angeles.

Who confidence coaching is for

Parents usually reach out when they see a capable teen holding themselves back. It often looks like this:

Confidence coaching is not treatment. If anxiety is severe, if your teen avoids school or friends, or if you notice signs of depression or self-harm, start with your teen’s doctor or a licensed therapist. A mentor can work alongside that care. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.

Where confidence actually comes from

Confidence rarely comes from being told you are great. It comes from doing something that felt hard and finding out you could handle it. Coaching builds that on purpose: small challenges, chosen by the teen, that stretch them a little further each week. Each one becomes evidence they can point to the next time they feel unsure. New to the idea? Start with what coaching is and how it works.

What coaching looks like week to week

  1. One dedicated mentor. The same person every week, matched to your teen’s personality and interests.
  2. Goals your teen chooses. Speaking up in one class, trying out for a team, applying for a first job or making a phone call they have been avoiding.
  3. Practice in session. Rehearsing the conversation, the presentation or the interview until it feels familiar.
  4. A weekly challenge. One or two real actions to try before the next session, sized so success is likely.
  5. Review without judgment. What went well, what was hard and what to try next. Setbacks are treated as information, not proof of failure.
  6. Check-ins between sessions. A text before a big moment and a quick call after help a lot.

Sessions are usually 60 minutes, weekly or several times a week. Cost is reviewed on the free intro call.

Why an outside mentor helps

Encouragement from a parent matters, but teens often discount it because parents are supposed to say nice things. A mentor’s honest feedback lands differently. The mentor also becomes a model: someone a few steps ahead who talks openly about their own mistakes and how they handled them. Our guides on building confidence in a teenager and leadership skills for teens have ideas you can use at home at the same time.

How parents are involved

Parents of high school students share their concerns on the intro call and receive regular progress updates on attendance and progress. Your teen also needs some privacy with the mentor to build trust, so updates focus on goals and growth rather than every conversation.

Questions to ask any coach for your teen

  1. Who exactly will work with my teen, and will it be the same person every week?
  2. How do you choose the match?
  3. How do you set challenges that stretch my teen without overwhelming them?
  4. What will I hear, and how often?
  5. What do you do if you see signs of anxiety or another concern that needs a professional?
  6. What does it cost?

Ask us the same questions. Our page on how we match mentors and the FAQ cover much of it.

What happens after you reach out

  1. A short assessment. The assessment takes about five minutes. It tells us about your teen, the main goals and what the weekly schedule looks like.
  2. A free 20-minute intro call. A member of our team hosts the call by video in your browser, weekdays 9 to 5 Pacific. You can also book it directly on the intro call page. We talk through fit, scheduling and cost; we do not publish prices, so cost is reviewed on this call.
  3. A mentor match within 2 business days. After the call, we match your teen with one dedicated mentor and set the first session. Mentors offer early morning, evening and weekend times.
