Blackburn Mentoring matches Cerritos students with one dedicated mentor for planning, routines, follow through and confidence, by video or in person in Los Angeles. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students and receive regular updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise grades or admissions; they help students manage a full, demanding week on their own.
The school picture in Cerritos
Most of Cerritos, along with Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and part of Lakewood, is served by the ABC Unified School District. Families here put a high value on education, and many students take advanced classes, enroll in specialized programs and add activities outside school.
Cerritos is a planned suburb with a strong family and multigenerational character. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 44.1% of residents were born outside the United States, 57.0% speak a language other than English at home and 58.0% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, compared with 36.0% countywide (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Many students grow up between family traditions and an American school calendar, and do it well, with real pressure attached.
What Cerritos students bring to a mentor
- A packed schedule. Advanced classes, activities, family responsibilities and weekend programs. A mentor helps build one honest plan and protect sleep.
- Executive function skills. Starting long projects early, estimating time and keeping track of everything without a parent’s reminders. See executive function coaching.
- Choosing, not just doing. Students who have always followed the plan sometimes need help figuring out what they actually want to study. Our college majors guide is a starting point.
- Getting ready to leave home. Laundry, budgets and an alarm clock are easy; managing unstructured time is not. See college transition mentoring.
- College students living at home. Commuting to campus while staying part of a busy household needs a clear weekly structure. See mentoring for college students.
How mentors work with the whole family
In close families, a student’s progress is a family matter, and that is a strength. The mentor keeps the weekly plan the student’s own while giving parents, and sometimes grandparents, clear and regular updates on goals. When the family wants it, the mentor coordinates with the school counselor so everyone is pulling in the same direction.
