Blackburn Mentoring matches El Segundo students with one dedicated mentor for planning, routines, follow through and confidence, in person in Los Angeles or by video. Parents of high school students can join the free 20 minute intro call and get regular updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise outcomes; they help students build the habits to manage school, activities and the step after high school.
The school picture in El Segundo
El Segundo is a small city with its own public school system: the El Segundo Unified School District reports 3,376 students enrolled in 2025 to 2026 according to Ed-Data, the K to 12 data partnership that includes the California Department of Education. In a district that size, students are known by name, which is a real strength, and it can also make a slipping student feel very visible.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports about 16,400 residents (2025 estimate), with 20.5% under 18 and 62.7% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor’s degree or higher (county: 36.0%; American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). El Segundo is also a major job center, with aerospace and technology employers near the airport, so many students grow up close to engineering and tech careers.
What El Segundo students bring to a mentor
- Small school, big expectations. Everyone notices a bad quarter. A mentor gives the student a private, steady place to make a plan and recover.
- Exploring a career before committing. Students surrounded by engineering and tech want to know if it fits. A mentor helps them test interests through classes, summer programs and conversations. See the college majors guide.
- Executive function skills. Starting assignments, breaking down projects and estimating time, with executive function coaching built into the week.
- College credit and planning. Dual enrollment, honors and AP choices and the A to G requirements, planned a year ahead.
- Getting ready to leave a small town. Going from a small district to a large campus is a big jump. See college transition mentoring.
A short trip to everything
El Segundo sits between the beach, the airport and the 405, with Metro C Line stations close by. For a teenager that makes real independence possible: getting to a job, a class or an internship without a parent driving. A mentor can turn that into practice, with the student planning trips and managing commitments on their own.
In person or by video
Our team is based in Los Angeles, and El Segundo is close to the Westside, so in person sessions at a convenient, appropriate place agreed on the intro call are often practical. Many families mix in video sessions on busy weeks. Mentors stay in touch by text and phone between sessions.
How to start
