Blackburn Mentoring gives Westchester and Playa del Rey students one dedicated mentor for planning, routines, follow through and confidence, in person in Los Angeles or by video. Parents of high school students can join the free 20 minute intro call, agree the goals and get regular updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise grades; they help students run their own week.
The school picture near the airport
Public school students in Westchester and Playa del Rey attend the Los Angeles Unified School District, which reported 497,105 students for 2025 to 2026 on Ed-Data. In a district that size, choosing between the neighborhood school and a magnet or other choice program is a real decision, and a mentor helps a student settle into whichever one they pick. We also work with students at charter, independent and parochial schools, and with college students.
This corner of the Westside sits right beside the airport. For families where parents work early shifts or travel, students may end up managing more of their own afternoons. Westchester also has its own rail stop: Metro’s K Line opened in October 2022 with a Westchester/Veterans station, which gives older students a way to reach a class, a job or an internship without waiting for a ride. Check Metro for current routes and schedules.
What students here bring to a mentor
- Afternoons on their own. When parents work long or early shifts, a student needs a routine that does not depend on someone at home. A mentor builds one and checks in.
- Choosing and settling into a school. Starting a magnet or another program across the district means new routines and a new commute. See magnet schools explained.
- Executive function skills. Starting assignments, estimating time and tracking every class. See executive function coaching.
- Planning for college. A to G requirements, course choices and deadlines, laid out a year at a time. See the junior year guide.
- College students. Undergraduates on campus or commuting from home who want a semester that holds together. See mentoring for college students.
