CSU Application and Impaction Explained for California Families

The California State University takes first year applications through Cal State Apply, one application that can go to several CSU campuses. For fall 2027 the filing period runs October 1 to November 30, 2026. To be eligible, California students complete the 15 A to G courses with a C minus or better and earn at least a 2.50 A to G GPA. Some majors and campuses are impacted, meaning they get more qualified applicants than they have room for, so they set higher bars and give priority to local applicants.

CSU basics for fall 2027

  • Where to apply: Cal State Apply, opening October 1, 2026, with a November 30, 2026 deadline posted for fall 2027 first year domestic applicants. Confirm each campus’s dates in the application.
  • Subject requirements: the 15 course A to G pattern, each course with a C minus or better. Check yours with our A to G requirements checker.
  • GPA: CSU calculates an A to G GPA on grades earned after 9th grade, with extra points for approved honors courses. California residents with a 2.50 or higher are eligible; those with a 2.00 to 2.49 may be considered using supplemental factors. Nonresidents need a 3.00 (source: the CSU first time freshman guidance page). Estimate yours with the UC and CSU GPA calculator and confirm with the official CSU GPA calculator.

What impaction means

The CSU’s page on impaction at the CSU explains that some majors and locations are in higher demand and are officially designated as impacted, which makes admission more selective. In practice:

  • Impacted majors: a major can be impacted at one campus and not at another. The list changes, so check the CSU impaction search for each campus.
  • Impacted campuses: a whole campus can be impacted, so the bar is higher for every major there.
  • Supplemental criteria: impacted programs rank applicants with higher GPA thresholds or additional criteria that each campus publishes.
  • Apply on time: CSU advises students interested in an impacted major or campus to apply during the priority filing period.

Local admission priority

CSU gives priority admission to students who apply from the areas nearest a university, which matters most at impacted campuses. Each CSU campus has a local admission area, made up of nearby high schools and community colleges. Families in Los Angeles County should check which campuses list their student’s high school as local, because the same record can be treated differently at a local campus than at a distant one.

Redirection

Eligible California applicants who are not admitted to the campuses they chose may be offered a place at an alternate CSU campus with space. Read any redirection offer carefully and compare it with the other options before the decision deadline.

How to apply smart

  • Apply to a mix: one or more local campuses plus campuses that are not impacted in your major.
  • List an alternate major if the campus allows it, choosing one you would actually study.
  • Look up each campus’s impaction status and supplemental criteria for your major before you choose.
  • Keep senior grades steady; admission is conditional on finishing as planned.
  • File the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application from October 1; the Cal Grant deadline is March 2, 2027.
  • Applying to UC too? Use the California senior year checklist and the UC application timeline.

Transfer students

Community college students who earn an Associate Degree for Transfer get guaranteed priority admission to a CSU campus, though not necessarily a particular campus or major. Impaction applies to transfers too, so plan early; see community college to UC and CSU transfer.

Where a mentor helps

Impaction makes the CSU less predictable than its minimums suggest, and seniors are often applying to several campuses and both systems at once. A mentor helps the student research each campus and major, keep a single deadline list, and keep fall grades steady while applications get done.

  • A campus and major research plan with the student doing the research.
  • One shared calendar for Cal State Apply, UC and financial aid dates.
  • Weekly check-ins so applications are submitted well before November 30.
  • Support comparing offers, including a redirection offer, in the spring.

Mentoring is not tutoring, test prep or admissions consulting, and no one can promise admission. Blackburn Mentoring works one on one by video nationwide and in person in Los Angeles, including families across Los Angeles County. Book a free 20 minute intro call to talk through your plan.
