Online Mentoring and Coaching in Rhode Island

Blackburn Mentoring provides one-on-one mentoring and coaching by video throughout Rhode Island, plus in person in Los Angeles, for teens 13 and up, college students and young adults, and has done this work since 2014. Everything starts with a free 20 minute intro call, and families are matched with a mentor within 2 business days.

Best for students and families like these:

  • A teen whose days drift into screens, with little they are building
  • A college student who keeps missing deadlines despite knowing the material
  • A young adult working toward a first job, a move out or a return to school
  • Families who want a mentor who meets by video, with parent updates when needed

Families and young adults anywhere in Rhode Island can work with a dedicated Blackburn mentor by video. Sessions are set in Eastern time, three hours ahead of our team in Los Angeles, and mentors stay in touch by text and phone between sessions.

Small state, big schedules

Rhode Island is the smallest state, and you can drive across it in about an hour. So why video? Because distance is rarely the real obstacle here. Schedules are. Between school, sports, jobs and commutes up to Boston or across the bay, finding a regular time to drive somewhere is often the hardest part. Online sessions fit into the gaps of a busy week and continue when a student leaves for college.

Bay, city and shore

Life in Rhode Island is organized around Narragansett Bay. Providence, the capital, sits at the top, with Pawtucket, Cranston and East Providence around it. Warwick is home to the airport. Newport and the East Bay towns have sailing, history and summer tourism. South County means beaches and a slower pace, and Block Island sits offshore.

The working picture

  • Health care and higher education are major employers in and around Providence.
  • Defense and the Navy have a long presence, from Newport to submarine and shipbuilding work on the bay.
  • Tourism and hospitality drive the coast, especially in summer.
  • Design, food and arts businesses have grown in Providence.
  • Many residents commute into Massachusetts for work.

The state’s history in jewelry and textile manufacturing still shows in its mill buildings, many now turned into housing and studios.

Education in a compact state

Rhode Island has city and town school districts, a strong network of independent and Catholic schools, and several regional districts. Public higher education is compact, with four-year and community college campuses around the state. There are also well-known private colleges and universities, including art and design schools, and they bring in a lot of students from out of state.

With Boston and the rest of New England so close, many Rhode Island students leave for college nearby, which can make the move feel small on a map and big in practice. Living away from home is a new skill, even an hour up the highway.

What a Rhode Island family can expect

It starts with a five-minute assessment that our team reads personally, followed by a free intro call. After that, you are matched with one mentor, and sessions settle into a set time each week: 60 minutes by video.

Parents of high school students can join the intro call, help agree the goals and receive regular progress updates. College students and adults decide what is shared and with whom.

Where a mentor helps

For teens, a mentor is a steady, outside adult who helps with planning, motivation and the habits that make the next stage easier; see mentoring for high school students. For college students in Rhode Island, Boston or anywhere else, see mentoring for college students. Young adults starting out, or living at home and unsure of the next step, often fit young adult mentoring. Families can read more on mentoring for families. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors.

Coming of age in the Ocean State

Rhode Island families often know each other across generations, and many teens grow up with grandparents a few minutes away, parish feasts and summer weekends on the water. Because everything is close, a teen can reach Providence, Newport or the beaches easily, but that same closeness means high school social circles overlap and news travels fast. Summer jobs at beach clubs, clam shacks, marinas and Newport sailing programs fill the warm months, and then work dries up after Labor Day. Winter nor’easters can shut schools and roads for a day or two at a time.

Housing costs have risen fast, and many young adults stay home or share apartments in Providence, Pawtucket or Cranston. Families weigh the public campuses and the community college, including the state’s free community college program for recent graduates, and some ask about a long-standing New England regional tuition break for certain programs out of state. Rules for both change, so check the official sites. Because the state is so small, a young adult can work in Massachusetts or Connecticut and still live at home, which blurs the line between staying and leaving.

Common situations for Rhode Island families and young adults

  • A teen with a busy beach club or restaurant job who loses momentum when the season ends in September.
  • A student living at home and driving to a nearby campus who misses out on the social side of college.
  • A graduate who wants to stay near family but sees better-paying jobs up the highway in Boston.
  • A young adult starting community college through the state’s free program and wanting a plan to finish.
  • A high schooler choosing between a career and technical program and a traditional college prep track.

Rhode Island keeps Eastern time, and we book each session on the local clock. Ocean State clients meet their mentor over video; in-person sessions exist solely in Los Angeles. Students who live at home while in school can read our guide for commuter college students, and recent graduates may want free community college programs. Mentoring is not therapy or clinical care. If someone needs mental health treatment, a licensed clinician is the right place to start, and a mentor can work alongside them.

Rhode Island is on Eastern time, three hours ahead of Los Angeles. A 6 pm session in Providence is 3 pm for the mentor, so evenings after practice are easy.

Rhode Island is small. Why not meet in person?

Our team is in Los Angeles, and Rhode Island clients work with us by video. That also means sessions continue without interruption when a student leaves for college.

Can a mentor help a student heading to college in Boston?
