Online Mentoring and Coaching in Virginia

Blackburn Mentoring provides one-on-one mentoring and coaching by video throughout Virginia, plus in person in Los Angeles, for teens 13 and up, college students and young adults, and has done this work since 2014. Everything starts with a free 20 minute intro call, and families are matched with a mentor within 2 business days.

Best for students and families like these:

  • A teen who will listen to another adult on school and plans more readily than to a parent
  • A student heading into a big step, such as senior year or the first year of college
  • A young adult building routines around work, money and independence
  • Busy or rural households where getting to an office every week is not realistic

Families and young adults anywhere in Virginia can work with a dedicated Blackburn mentor by video. The whole state is on Eastern time, three hours ahead of Los Angeles, and we schedule every session in your local time. High school students always have a parent or guardian involved, from the intro call through regular progress updates.

From the Beltway to the Blue Ridge

Virginia stretches from the Atlantic coast to the Appalachian Mountains, and each region has its own pace. Northern Virginia is tied to Washington, DC and moves fast. Richmond, the capital, is a mid-sized city with deep history. Hampton Roads, around Norfolk and Virginia Beach, is a coastal metro built around the Navy and the port. Charlottesville and the Shenandoah Valley sit in the Piedmont and mountains to the west, and Roanoke and Southwest Virginia run deep into Appalachia.

Traffic in the north and distance in the southwest are both reasons families here choose video: the mentor fits into the week instead of the commute.

An economy anchored by government and defense

  • Federal government agencies, defense contractors and consulting firms concentrated in Northern Virginia.
  • A huge share of the nation’s data centers, also in Northern Virginia.
  • Military bases and shipbuilding in Hampton Roads.
  • Finance, law and state government in Richmond.
  • Agriculture, wineries and tourism in the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley.

For many families, a parent’s work brings frequent relocation, travel or long hours. Military families in particular may move every few years, and a teenager can land in a new school mid-year with no friends and a different set of course requirements. A mentor who meets by video can stay with a student through a move, which is often exactly when consistency matters most.

Schools and colleges in Virginia

Virginia’s public school systems include some of the largest districts in the country in the DC suburbs, along with small rural divisions in the mountains. There is a long tradition of independent and boarding schools across the state. Virginia is also known for its strong public universities, alongside a statewide community college system with clear paths into four-year schools and a number of private colleges.

Because the in-state options are strong, competition for them is real, and many Virginia students feel that pressure early. Others head out of state, and Virginia campuses draw many students from elsewhere.

What this means at each stage

High school

The stakes can feel enormous by ninth grade. A mentor helps a student build habits, keep perspective and own their plan. See mentoring for high school students.

College

A strong high school record does not always translate to managing time alone. Our college student mentoring helps with routines, deadlines and setbacks.

Young adults and professionals

Recent graduates in Northern Virginia face a high cost of living and a crowded job market; those elsewhere may be weighing a move. See young adult mentoring and mentoring for professionals.

How we work

One dedicated mentor, goals broken into weekly steps, 60 minute video sessions weekly or several times a week, and text and phone contact in between. Read how online mentoring works, see our approach for families, or browse mentoring in every state.

Growing up in Virginia: clearances, commutes and the coast

Northern Virginia has its own career vocabulary. Many first jobs in Arlington, Reston, Herndon and Ashburn involve federal agencies or contractors, and some require a security clearance, which brings long waits, background investigations and real consequences for choices made in college. Commutes on I-66, I-95 and the Dulles corridor eat hours, and graduates often live with parents in Fairfax, Loudoun or Prince William County while they save. Teens in those counties may also face competitive application processes in middle school for regional science and technology programs.

Elsewhere the rhythm changes. Virginia Beach teenagers often spend summers working the Oceanfront, while Shenandoah Valley families know the fall rush of orchards and wineries. In Southwest Virginia, the fading of coal work leaves many young adults choosing between Roanoke, Richmond and staying put with limited options. The statewide community colleges have transfer agreements with many four-year schools, and lots of families treat two years close to home as a deliberate way to save money. Agreements change, so confirm the details with the college and the state.

Situations Virginia families and young adults often face

  • A recent graduate in Reston deciding whether a clearance-track job is worth the wait and the scrutiny.
  • An eighth grader in Loudoun or Prince William County preparing applications for a selective regional STEM program.
  • A community college student mapping a transfer path and keeping the grades the agreement expects.
  • A young adult from Southwest Virginia weighing a move to Roanoke or Richmond for work in their field.
  • A Virginia Beach teen working long Oceanfront shifts all summer before senior year.

Virginia is on Eastern time throughout, and we hold every session by video in that zone; in-person sessions take place only in Los Angeles. Families here often read how transfer agreements work and STEM high schools explained. Also see education by state and the metro pages for Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Common questions

What time zone are Virginia sessions in?

Eastern time, statewide. After-school and evening sessions are easy to place, since 7 pm in Virginia is 4 pm for a mentor in Los Angeles.

We are a military family and may move soon. Can the mentor stay the same?

Yes. Because sessions are online, the same mentor can continue through a move to another base or another state.

Do you help with applications to Virginia colleges?

Mentors are not admissions counselors. They help students manage deadlines and follow through, and can coordinate with a counselor the family already uses.
