Mentoring for Capistrano USD Students and Families

Blackburn Mentoring gives Capistrano Unified students one mentor who meets with them by video, helps them plan the week and keeps the plan moving between sessions with short check ins. Mentoring is especially useful for students in virtual or independent programs, students making up credits and students carrying a heavy honors load, because all three need structure the school day does not fully provide. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students, agree the goals and get regular updates.

Sessions for families in this area happen by video. In person sessions are available in Los Angeles for families who are there.

Capistrano Unified at a glance

Capistrano Unified enrolled 46,429 students in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. The district’s About Us page says it was founded in 1965, covers 200 square miles and serves San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, plus Las Flores, Coto de Caza, Dove Canyon, Ladera Ranch, Rancho Mission Viejo and Wagon Wheel. It lists 30 elementary schools, five TK to 8 schools, eight middle schools, six comprehensive high schools, eight charter schools and alternative programs that include a virtual middle school and a virtual high school. The same page reports a 95.9 percent graduation rate.

A district this large means a student’s experience depends a lot on which campus and which program they are in, and families moving within South County can change schools without changing districts. A mentor stays the same when the campus changes.

Graduation requirements and the A to G list

The district’s graduation requirements page says the Board of Trustees has adopted requirements for all students that exceed the state’s, and that course details are in each high school’s curriculum guide and the district’s College and Career Planning Guide. The page strongly encourages students to take courses that meet A to G. The credit totals on that page are shown in an image we could not verify for this guide, so confirm the exact numbers for your student’s class with the counselor.

If a student falls behind, the district runs a program for making up credits. A mentor can help a student get through those courses on a steady schedule instead of in a final week rush, and make sure the plan also checks whether the replacement course counts for A to G.

One thing every Capistrano Unified family should know: finishing the district’s graduation requirements and being eligible for the University of California or California State University are not the same test. UC asks for 15 A to G courses with a grade of C or better, at least 11 of them done before senior year, and a 3.0 GPA for California residents, according to UC Admissions. Our free A to G checker and UC and CSU GPA calculator let a student see where they stand in a few minutes, and a mentor turns the gaps into a semester plan.

Key dates for 2026 to 2027

The district’s 2026 to 2027 calendar lists the first day of school on August 18, 2026, the end of the high school first semester on December 17, 2026, winter break from December 21 through January 1, spring break from April 5 to 9, 2027, and the last day for students on June 3, 2027. The calendar notes approval was pending the outcome of association negotiations, so check the district site for the current version.

A first semester that ends before winter break means finals land in mid December. A mentor maps the last six weeks of fall backward from that date so a student is not learning a unit and studying for its final in the same week.

How mentoring supports Capistrano students

  • Virtual and independent study students. Without bells and classrooms, the week can blur. A mentor sets daily start times, weekly targets and a short check in rhythm.
  • Making up credits. A mentor turns a credit plan into weekly milestones and keeps the student moving through it.
  • Changing campuses. When a family moves or a student transfers, the mentor and the routine stay the same.
  • Long commutes and early practices. South County students often juggle drives and early sports. The plan protects sleep first.
  • Senior year and beyond. The same mentor can stay with a student through applications and into the first term away.

How video sessions work for South Orange County families

Sessions run by video on a schedule that fits the school week, with early morning, evening and weekend times available. Between sessions the mentor checks in briefly by text so the plan keeps moving. In person sessions happen only in Los Angeles, so families who spend time there can meet in person when it helps.

How to start

  1. Take a short assessment. Tell us about your student and the goals. It takes about five minutes.
  2. Have a free 20 minute intro call. For high school students, a parent is welcome to join. We talk through fit, schedule and how your student would meet.
  3. Meet the mentor. New clients are matched with one mentor within two business days.
  4. Start the plan. Regular sessions by video, or in person in Los Angeles, with check ins between them.
