Mentoring Guides by School District and College System

Every school district and college system has its own calendar, graduation rules and fine print. This hub collects our guides to the public districts Los Angeles area families use most and to the three California college systems, each with cited facts and what a mentor does for students there. Blackburn Mentoring works one on one with high school and college students by video nationwide and in person in Los Angeles, starting with a free 20 minute intro call.

Public school districts

Los Angeles County alone has 80 school districts, and each one sets its own calendar and its own graduation requirements on top of the state minimums. Our district guides explain what is different about each district, how its requirements compare with the University of California and California State University A to G list, and how a mentor supports students there. Enrollment figures are for 2025 to 2026 from Ed-Data, the K to 12 data partnership that includes the California Department of Education.

College systems

California’s public higher education runs on three systems, and each has its own rules for units, academic standing and transfer. These guides are written for students who are already enrolled, and for parents trying to help from a distance.

Beyond college, our mentoring for law students and new lawyers covers the first year of law school, California bar exam study and the first year at a firm.

What a mentor does inside any system

Systems differ; the skills students need do not. A Blackburn mentor helps a high school or college student plan the week, start early, track requirements against the official lists, prepare for meetings with counselors and advisors, and recover quickly after a setback. Mentors do not tutor, replace school counselors or promise grades or admissions. Sessions happen by video nationwide and in person in Los Angeles. If what is going on is more than structure and follow-through, Blackburn Clinical Services, our sister practice, offers therapy and psychiatry for college students.

School counselors and educational consultants who want to suggest mentoring to a family can start at for school counselors.

Common questions

Why does my school district matter for mentoring?

Districts set different graduation requirements and calendars. Some require a C or better in required courses, some add service hours or a portfolio. A mentor plans around your district’s actual rules.

Is meeting graduation requirements the same as being eligible for UC or CSU?

No. UC and CSU use the A to G subject list with a minimum grade of C, which can go beyond a district’s graduation requirements. Our A to G checker shows the gap.

Do you only work with public school students?

No. We work with students in public, independent and parochial schools and with college students at any institution. These guides focus on public systems because their rules are published.

How do sessions work?

Sessions happen by video nationwide and in person in Los Angeles. New clients are matched with one mentor within two business days of the intro call.
