Blackburn Mentoring pairs Torrance students with one dedicated mentor for planning, routines, follow through and confidence, by video or in person in Los Angeles. We work with high school students (a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call and get regular updates), college students living at home and students planning a transfer. Mentors do not tutor; they help a student organize the week around the work.
The school picture in Torrance
Torrance has about 138,000 residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau (2025 estimate), and most of its students attend the Torrance Unified School District, which enrolled 22,014 students in 2025 to 2026 according to Ed-Data, the K to 12 data partnership that includes the California Department of Education. A city this size means big high schools with many electives, many teachers and many online platforms, which is great for options and easy for a quiet student to drift in.
Torrance families are a mix of backgrounds and ambitions. The same Census source reports that 54.0% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (county: 36.0%), 29.9% of residents were born outside the United States and 40.1% speak a language other than English at home (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Some students have parents who know the college process well; others are the first in the family to navigate it. See mentoring for first generation college students.
What Torrance students bring to a mentor
- Getting lost in a big school. Missing assignments that pile up in an online portal before anyone notices. A mentor builds a weekly check of every class and a habit of asking for help early.
- Course planning. Honors and AP choices, the University of California and California State University A to G subject requirements and a realistic load. See honors vs AP and the four year high school plan.
- Living at home in college. Many South Bay students start at a community college or commute to a university, which takes more self structure than living on campus. See community college mentoring.
- Planning a transfer. Keeping transfer requirements, deadlines and grades on track semester by semester with transfer student mentoring.
- Work and school. A part time job at the mall or a family business plus a full class load, and a calendar that actually fits both.
What a week with a mentor looks like
A typical week starts with a session to look at every class, every deadline and every shift, then sets two or three specific goals: for example, turn in the missing lab, email one teacher about a retake and study for the test in two blocks instead of one late night. The mentor checks in by text midweek. Parents of high school students get regular updates on the goals, not a list of every grade.
In person or by video from Torrance
Our team is based in Los Angeles. Torrance sits between the 405 and the 110, and school night traffic north can be slow, so many families use video for regular sessions and meet in person in Los Angeles when it helps, at a convenient, appropriate place agreed on the intro call. Early morning, evening and weekend times are available.
How to start

Common questions
Do you work with Torrance Unified students?
Yes, and with students at independent and parochial schools, community colleges and universities. The plan is built around the student’s own classes and calendar.
My student is at a community college and lives at home. Can a mentor help?
Yes. Students living at home often need the most structure: a weekly schedule, a study routine and a transfer plan with dates. Mentoring works well by video for them.
Is this tutoring?
No. Mentors help with planning, routines, follow through and confidence, and they can work alongside a tutor if course content is the issue.
How fast can we start?
After the free 20 minute intro call, new clients are matched with a mentor within two business days.
