Online Mentoring in Buffalo and Rochester, NY

Students, families and young adults in Buffalo, Rochester and the towns around them can work with a Blackburn mentor by video. You get one dedicated mentor, sessions set in Eastern time on a weekly or more frequent schedule, and text and phone contact between meetings. Our team is in Los Angeles, so in Western New York every session happens online.

Two Great Lakes cities with a lot in common

Buffalo sits at the eastern tip of Lake Erie and Rochester on the south shore of Lake Ontario, about an hour apart on the Thruway. Both cities have rebuilt around health care, higher education and advanced manufacturing. Buffalo has its downtown medical campus, banking and a growing tech scene; Rochester still carries its history in optics, imaging and photonics, along with large health systems.

Houses are more affordable than in the big coastal metros, and suburbs such as Amherst, Orchard Park, Clarence, Pittsford, Penfield and Fairport are full of families who chose to stay or came back. Being close to home is a real strength. It can also mean a young adult feels pressure to stay put or, the opposite, to leave and prove something.

Winter is part of the plan

Lake-effect snow is not a talking point here; it is how November through March works. Short days and long stretches indoors can flatten motivation, especially for a teenager or a college student who is already behind. A mentor plans around the season instead of pretending it is not coming:

  • Set a fixed wake time that does not move on snow days or school closures.
  • Pick indoor exercise that happens on a schedule, not when the weather cooperates.
  • Shrink weekly goals in January and February so there are wins to build on.
  • Plan the first warm weekends in April as something to look forward to.

Winter blues are common. If low mood lasts for weeks or affects sleep, eating or school, a licensed professional is the right step, and a mentor can work alongside one with permission. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Who a mentor works with in Western New York

High school students

A sophomore who has stopped turning in work, or a senior weighing whether to stay in state. A parent or guardian is always part of it: they join the intro call, agree the goals and get regular progress updates. See mentoring for high school students.

College students

The region has a dense cluster of colleges and universities, public and private, plus strong community colleges. A mentor helps a student build a weekly routine, handle a hard semester or plan an internship search without losing the thread.

Young adults and professionals

A graduate who moved back home to save money, or a twenty-something at a hospital, bank or engineering firm who wants a clearer next step. Our guide to moving back home after college covers how to make that stretch productive.

How the schedule lines up

Buffalo and Rochester are three hours ahead of Los Angeles. A 3:30 pm session after school is 12:30 pm for your mentor, and a 7 pm session after work is still mid-afternoon in California. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, on a weekly plan billed week to week or a monthly plan, always scheduled in your local time.

Where a mentor helps

A mentor is a consistent adult outside the family who meets every week, helps turn big goals into small steps and keeps the plan honest between sessions. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors, and they can coordinate with those people when a family already has them. You can read how it works on video on our online mentoring page.

Common questions

Are sessions in person anywhere in Western New York?

No. In-person sessions are only in Los Angeles. In Buffalo and Rochester, mentoring is by video, with text and phone contact between sessions.

Can mentoring continue if a student goes away to college?

Yes. Because sessions are online, the same mentor can keep working with a student who moves to campus anywhere in the country.

What if school is canceled for snow?

Video sessions do not depend on the roads, so a snow day usually means a session goes ahead as planned, or moves to a better time that day.
