Online Mentoring in Greenville, SC, and the Upstate

Families, students and young adults in Greenville, Simpsonville, Greer, Mauldin, Anderson, Spartanburg and across the Upstate can work with a Blackburn mentor by video. Each person meets one dedicated mentor weekly or more often, in Eastern time, with text and phone contact between sessions. Our team is based in Los Angeles, so Upstate mentoring happens online, for teens from age 13 with a parent involved, college students and young professionals.

How the Upstate changed

Greenville used to be known for textile mills. Over the past few decades it became one of the Southeast’s manufacturing and engineering centers, with large automotive and tire operations, aerospace suppliers, logistics firms and engineering offices strung along I-85. Health care, finance and a growing tech scene fill in the rest. Downtown, with Falls Park on the Reedy River and the Swamp Rabbit Trail, has become a magnet for young professionals and new families, many relocating from larger and more expensive cities.

New in town

A lot of Upstate families arrived recently. A parent took an engineering or plant management job, the family bought a house in a new subdivision, and the kids started at a school where everyone else already had friends. That move can be harder on a teenager than it looks. A mentor gives them a steady person to plan with while they find their footing, and gives parents a regular update. Our guide on when a teen has no friends has practical steps for that stretch.

Upstate by the numbers

  • Only 33.7 percent of adults in the Greenville metro hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (Population Review, from U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 5-year estimates; metro level). With so many good jobs reached through technical training and apprenticeships, a mentor helps a student compare a degree, a two-year program and an apprenticeship on equal terms.
  • The average commute in the Greenville-Anderson-Greer metro is 24.9 minutes (same source, metro level). Add Woodruff Road at rush hour and a weekly drive to an appointment becomes a real cost; a video session from home skips it.
  • At the state level, 29.6 percent of South Carolina adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents, below the national 32.9 percent (2024 American Community Survey, as compiled by FinanceBuzz). Young adults here tend to move out earlier, so first budgets, first leases and first homes come up in sessions sooner than in pricier regions.
  • South Carolina law says public schools may not open before the third Monday in August, with year-round calendars exempt (S.C. Code Section 59-1-425; state level). Early August is the natural time to set up mentoring so the routine is in place before the first bell.

Local context: the I-85 corridor and its calendar

The Upstate stretches along I-85 from Anderson through Greenville to Spartanburg, and much of daily life is shaped by that corridor. Summers are hot and humid, winters are short and mild with the odd ice day, and the Blue Ridge foothills are close enough for weekend hiking. Classes start in the third week of August, fall weekends belong to football and church, and summers at the lakes are a family tradition.

The economy runs on advanced manufacturing, automotive and aerospace suppliers, logistics, health care and a growing downtown professional sector. Many high school students hear early about youth apprenticeships and co-op roles that split time between a classroom and a plant floor, and the state’s lottery-funded merit scholarships require a minimum GPA to keep. What Upstate families ask: whether a young adult should choose technical training or college, how to give a teen structure in a fast-growing suburb, how to help a child settle after a relocation for manufacturing work, and whether evening sessions are possible after a shift.

Engineering, manufacturing and young careers

Real demand for engineers, technicians and skilled trades is a gift, but it also invites pressure to choose too soon. A mentor helps a teen or young adult look honestly at what they enjoy, talk with people who do the work through informational interviews, and make a step-by-step plan once they choose. Situations that come up across the Upstate

  • A student in a youth apprenticeship wants to keep grades up while putting in real hours at work.
  • A college sophomore is at risk of losing a state merit scholarship and needs a plan for next term.
  • A young adult raised in Greer or Mauldin is priced out of downtown and is comparing Easley, Travelers Rest and Fountain Inn.
  • A transplant engineer in their mid-twenties has a good job and no friends outside the office.

Session times from Greenville

The Upstate keeps Eastern time, three hours ahead of the Pacific clock our mentors work on, so even an 8 pm session lands at 5 pm for the mentor.

SlotYour time (Eastern)Mentor’s time (Pacific)
After school4:00 pm1:00 pm
After practice5:30 pm2:30 pm
After a day shift7:00 pm4:00 pm
Late evening8:00 pm5:00 pm

Shift workers can book early-morning sessions before a day starts or weekend sessions when the plant is quiet. Rotating schedules are fine; the mentor sets the week’s slot around the posted shift.

Where a mentor helps

A mentor is a dedicated adult who helps set goals, break them into weekly steps and stay on track, with permission to share progress with family. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors. Teens usually start with mentoring for high school students. Sessions in South Carolina are by video, and in-person meetings happen only in Los Angeles; the online mentoring page explains the format and mentoring in South Carolina covers the state.

Common questions

Do you serve Greenville, Greer, Anderson and Spartanburg?

Yes. Anyone in the Upstate, from Anderson and Easley to Greer, Simpsonville and Spartanburg, can work with a mentor by video. Where you live in the region makes no difference to scheduling or matching.

When does school start in the Upstate, and when should mentoring begin?

South Carolina law keeps public schools from opening before the third Monday in August, except year-round calendars. Starting mentoring in early August gives a student two or three sessions to set up a routine before classes begin. Families can also start mid-year; there is no enrollment window.

What time are evening sessions in Greenville on Pacific time?

Greenville is three hours ahead of Pacific time. A 7:00 pm session in Greenville is 4:00 pm for the mentor, and an 8:00 pm session is 5:00 pm. We book everything in your local time.

Can a mentor help a student decide between engineering and a trade?

A mentor helps a student explore both, talk with people in each field and build a plan for whichever they choose. Mentors do not give admissions or career counseling, but they can work alongside a school counselor.

Is there an office in South Carolina?

No. Our team is in Los Angeles, and Upstate mentoring is entirely by video, with text and phone contact between sessions. In-person meetings are offered only in Los Angeles.
