Blackburn mentoring is available by video in Columbia, South Carolina, and the Midlands, including Lexington, Irmo, Chapin and Blythewood. Each person works with one dedicated mentor, meets on an Eastern time schedule and stays in touch by text and phone between sessions. Our team is in Los Angeles, so every Midlands session is online.
Famously hot, and more than a capital
Columbia leans into its summers with the slogan Famously Hot, and anyone who has spent an August here understands why. The city is the state capital and a college town, and one of the Army’s largest basic training posts sits on its eastern edge. The Congaree, Broad and Saluda rivers meet here, Lake Murray stretches west toward Chapin, and Congaree National Park protects old-growth bottomland forest just southeast of town.
The Midlands economy rests on state government, health care, insurance, higher education, military training and a steady stream of manufacturing and distribution work along I-77 and I-26. That mix gives young people a wide range of first jobs, from agency and hospital roles downtown to technician work at plants out in the country.
Session times from Columbia
Columbia is three hours ahead of our mentors in Los Angeles, and the gap does not change when the clocks do.

|---|---|---|
| After school | 4:00 pm | 1:00 pm |
| After practice in the heat | 6:00 pm | 3:00 pm |
| After an agency or hospital shift | 7:00 pm | 4:00 pm |
| Latest start | 8:00 pm | 5:00 pm |
Early-morning sessions are offered for students who want to start the day with a plan, and weekend slots help families with a service member on an irregular schedule. Sessions are 60 minutes.
Columbia by the numbers
- A young metro. The median age in the Columbia metro is 38 (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Between college students, new soldiers and young state workers, there are a lot of people in their late teens and twenties figuring out what comes next.
- Independence is within reach. The median owner-occupied home is valued at $270,400 and the median household income is $70,788 (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Living on your own is a realistic goal here, and a mentor helps a young adult build the budget and habits to get there.
- Fewer young adults at home than the national average. 29.6% of South Carolina adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents, a state level figure, compared with 32.9% nationally in 2025 (FinanceBuzz analysis of ACS data). Many young adults are launching on their own, and parents often still want to be part of the conversation.
- Economic pressure is real for many families. The metro poverty rate is 13.8% (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Mentors schedule around jobs and family responsibilities, and help young adults plan for steadier work.
- Commutes add up. The mean travel time to work is 25.8 minutes (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). A session from home spares one more drive through the I-20 and I-26 interchange that locals call Malfunction Junction.
The Midlands calendar
South Carolina law says public schools may not open for students before the third Monday in August, with year-round calendars exempt (S.C. Code 59-1-425). That makes early August the natural time to set up mentoring, so routines are in place before the first bell. The legislative session from January into spring changes the pace for anyone working near the State House, and fall Saturdays revolve around football.
Long, hot summers affect energy, sleep and motivation. A mentor helps plan around the season rather than fighting it: exercise early in the morning or indoors from June through September, a summer job or course with a clear finish line, and a consistent wake time when school is out. Winters are mild. Our guide on a teen summer plan has more ideas.
Three groups who often look for a mentor
College students far from home, or close to it
Some students come to Columbia from across the Southeast and the Northeast; others grew up down the road and live at home while enrolled. Either way, the freedom of college can outrun a student’s planning skills. A mentor meets with the student weekly, helps build a schedule and study plan and checks in between sessions. See mentoring for college students.
Military-connected families
Families stationed in the Midlands often move every few years. A video mentor can stay with a teenager through a move, keeping routines and goals steady while schools and friends change. Mentors work alongside base family programs and school liaisons, not in place of them; see mentoring for military families.
Young adults in government and health care
State agencies, hospitals and insurers hire many people in their twenties. A mentor helps with the questions that follow: how to grow in a large organization, whether to pursue a certification and how to build a life outside work.
Situations that come up often in the Midlands
- A student from a small town in a nearby county who feels lost in large lecture classes and an unfamiliar city.
- A senior in Lexington or Chapin who wants to understand how to keep a state merit scholarship once in college.
- A young adult at a plant in a neighboring county who wants to move from production into a skilled maintenance role.
- A first-year staffer near the State House who is unsure how to grow after the session ends.
Where a mentor helps
A mentor is a steady, practical guide for goals and follow-through, not a tutor, therapist or admissions counselor. For high school students, a parent or guardian can join the intro call, help agree the goals and get regular progress updates; see mentoring for high school students. Our online mentoring page explains video sessions, and mentoring in South Carolina covers the state.

Common questions
Do you serve Columbia, Lexington and Irmo?
Yes. Anyone in Columbia, Lexington, Irmo, Chapin, Blythewood or the rest of the Midlands can work with a mentor by video. Our team is in Los Angeles and meets in person only there, so Midlands mentoring is entirely online.
Can you help a college student in Columbia who is falling behind?
Yes. A mentor helps the student see what slipped, build a weekly schedule for classes and study, and use the campus resources already available. With the student’s permission, parents receive updates when needed.
What time are evening sessions in Columbia on Pacific time?
A 4:00 to 8:00 pm session in Columbia is 1:00 to 5:00 pm Pacific, so evening slots are easy to arrange. Early-morning and weekend sessions are also available. We schedule in your local time.
Can a mentor stay with my teen if we get new military orders?
Yes. Sessions are online, so the same mentor can continue after a move anywhere in the United States, with sessions reset to the new local time.
Can a parent arrange mentoring for a student in Columbia?
Yes. Parents often start the process with the sign-up and the free intro call. With the student’s permission, they receive regular progress updates.
