Online Mentoring in Knoxville

Blackburn Mentoring is available to families and young adults in Knoxville, Farragut, Maryville, Oak Ridge and the rest of East Tennessee by video. Each person has one dedicated mentor, meets weekly or several times a week on Eastern time, and can text or call between sessions. Our team is in Los Angeles, so all Knoxville mentoring happens online; in-person sessions are only in Los Angeles.

Between the mountains and the lab

Knoxville sits in the Tennessee Valley with the Great Smoky Mountains on the horizon. The economy has an unusual mix: a national laboratory and related energy and research employers in Oak Ridge, a federal power agency downtown, higher education, health care, manufacturing and a steady tourism trade heading toward the mountains. Family life often involves the outdoors: hiking on weekends, the lake in summer and football in the fall.

Knoxville by the numbers

Census figures for the Knoxville metro, each tied to something practical:

  • A median age of 40.6 (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024, via Data USA), older than the Nashville metro (36.9) or the Memphis metro (36.8). Many parents here have older teens or grown children, and plenty of grandparents are close by and involved.
  • About 70,000 university students live in the metro (ACS 2024, via Data USA). A big campus can be energizing and easy to get lost in, and weekly mentoring helps a student build a rhythm and handle setbacks before they snowball.
  • Median property value of $290,200 and median household income of $72,422 (ACS 2024, via Data USA). Costs are lower than in Nashville, so many graduates can stay near family and still move out on their own.
  • An average commute of 24.4 minutes (ACS 2024, via Data USA), longer from Maryville, Oak Ridge or the outlying counties. A video session saves a drive at the end of a long day.
  • 13 percent of workers work from home (ACS 2024, via Data USA), so most parents are at work in the afternoon; early-evening sessions let a parent sit in when it helps.

The East Tennessee year

Most Tennessee schools return in early to mid-August (WeAreTeachers, citing MDR data for the 2026 to 27 school year, Tennessee state level), so the second half of July is a good time to start. Fall Saturdays bring huge football crowds downtown, which reshapes traffic, restaurant shifts and study time for anyone working game days. Winters are colder than in the rest of the state, with a few snow days, and summers send teenagers to the tourism corridor toward the mountains, where theme attractions, cabins and restaurants hire for long shifts. Thanksgiving and winter break bring college students home.

Knoxville draws students from small towns and hollows all over East Tennessee, and many are the first in their families to live in a city or start college. Tennessee’s tuition-free community and technical college programs open real doors, though they come with deadlines, service hours and progress requirements. The job market is solid but smaller than in the big metros, so much hiring moves through personal connections. Young adults who stay often settle in South Knoxville near the trail network, Fountain City, Bearden or Powell.

Situations that come up often in Knoxville

  • A teen spends a summer driving to tourism jobs in Sevier County and needs a plan for sleep, money and fall classes.
  • A student using a tuition-free community college program wants to keep eligibility and plan a transfer.
  • A college junior who works game-day shifts falls behind every fall weekend.
  • A young adult from a rural county moves to Knoxville and is learning city life, rent and a new social circle at once.

Knoxville families ask us about weekly accountability for college students, help for a high schooler with direction and organization, early-morning sessions on Eastern time, and updates for parents who live out of state. Each is answered below.

Session times from Knoxville

Tennessee is split between time zones. Knoxville is on Eastern time while Nashville and Memphis are on Central, so Knoxville sits three hours ahead of Los Angeles, every month of the year.

Where a mentor helps

A mentor is a consistent adult who helps someone set clear goals, make a weekly plan and follow through. For high school students, a parent or guardian is always part of the process. College students fit mentoring for college students, and students in a tuition-free two-year program can see mentoring for community college students. The online mentoring page explains the video format, and our guide to working while in college is a practical companion.
