Southwest Florida families can work with a Blackburn mentor by video from Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Estero or anywhere in Collier and Lee counties. Each person gets one dedicated mentor, sessions are set in Eastern time, and text and phone check-ins keep the plan moving between meetings. Our team is based in Los Angeles.
A coast that changes size every winter
Life on the lower Gulf Coast runs on two calendars. From roughly November through April, seasonal residents arrive, traffic on US 41 and I-75 thickens, restaurants fill and spring training brings baseball crowds to Fort Myers. Then summer comes: heat, afternoon thunderstorms, hurricane season and a much quieter town.
For a teenager or young adult who grew up here, that rhythm shapes everything from part-time work to social life. Seasonal jobs in hospitality and retail are plentiful in winter and thin out in summer, which is exactly when students are free. A mentor helps plan around that: lining up work early, using the slow months for a skill or a course, and not letting a quiet summer turn into three months on a phone.
Growing up in an older community
A large share of residents in Naples and the surrounding area are retirees. A high school student may feel there is little to do; a college graduate who moves home may find few peers and a job market tilted toward health care, construction, real estate and tourism. Neither is a dead end, but both call for a deliberate plan.
- For teens: a weekly structure for school, a job or volunteer role, and one or two interests that get real time. See building a teen summer plan.
- For young adults home after college: a job search routine, a savings target and a timeline for the next move. See moving back home after college.
- For anyone feeling isolated: a concrete plan to meet people, which a mentor will actually follow up on.
After the storms
Hurricane Ian in 2022, and Helene and Milton in 2024, left lasting marks on Fort Myers Beach, Sanibel, Cape Coral and other coastal communities. Some families rebuilt, some moved, and some students had a school year interrupted. A mentor cannot fix disruption, but one steady weekly appointment that continues by video, wherever the family is staying, gives a young person something that does not move.
Session times from Southwest Florida
Naples and Fort Myers are on Eastern time, three hours ahead of our Pacific-based mentors.
| Slot | Naples and Fort Myers (Eastern) | Mentor (Pacific) |
|---|---|---|
| After school | 4:30 pm | 1:30 pm |
| After work | 6:15 pm | 3:15 pm |
| Evening | 8:00 pm | 5:00 pm |
Early-morning sessions before school or a shift and weekend sessions are also possible. Families who split the year between Florida and a home up north keep the same mentor and simply shift the session to the local time where they are that month.
Southwest Florida by the numbers
- An older region. The median age across the Cape Coral-Fort Myers-Naples combined area is 49.6 (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Teens and young adults have fewer peers, and grandparents are often part of family decisions, so mentors are used to involving them when the family wants that.
- A small young adult cohort. People ages 25 to 34 make up 10.7% of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers metro (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 5-year 2023, via CensusDepth). A young adult home from college may have to work harder to find friends and professional contacts.
- Long drives. The mean travel time to work in the combined area is 30.8 minutes (American Community Survey 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter), and it gets worse in season. A video session avoids one more trip on I-75.
- Many bilingual families. 23.1% of residents in the combined area were born outside the United States (same source). Many families are working through U.S. college applications or a professional job search for the first time, and a mentor helps a student take it one step at a time.
- A lot of young adults at home. At the state level, 36.6% of Florida adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents, against 32.9% nationally (FinanceBuzz analysis of 2024 American Community Survey data). High coastal housing costs keep that number high here.
Southwest Florida for families and young adults: daily realities
Southwest Florida is spread out, and where a family can afford to live shapes a teenager’s week. Lehigh Acres, Golden Gate and North Fort Myers offer cheaper housing, but a job or activity may sit a long drive away on Colonial Boulevard, Immokalee Road or I-75. Inland, Immokalee is a farming community where many students come from farmworker families and become the first to head to college.
Rebuilding after recent hurricanes has kept construction, roofing, electrical and marine trades busy, and young adults who like working with their hands have real options. Teens often find early jobs at golf courses, country clubs and marinas. Lee and Collier County public schools opened on August 11, 2026, one day after most Florida districts (district calendars for 2026 to 27, compiled by FloridaSchoolCalendar.com, county level), so the best time to start mentoring before fall is late July. The questions families here ask most are about stability for a teen after a storm, launching a young adult when rent is high, peer connection in a retirement-heavy area, and evening sessions.
Situations that come up often in Naples and Fort Myers
- A teen in Lehigh Acres wants a job but needs to figure out transportation first.
- A first-generation student from Immokalee manages applications and scholarships with parents who work long seasonal hours.
- A young adult considers an electrical or construction path during the rebuilding years.
- A college student living at home in Cape Coral struggles to make friends on a commuter schedule.

Common questions
Do you serve Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral and Bonita Springs?
Yes. We work with clients across Lee and Collier counties, including Naples, Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs, Estero, Lehigh Acres and Immokalee. All sessions are online, with text and phone contact between them.
Can mentoring continue during hurricane recovery?
Yes. Sessions are online, so they continue from wherever the family is staying, whether that is a relative’s house or a rental across the state. When a household is unsettled, the mentor trims the plan to a few essentials and builds back up as life settles.
What time are evening sessions in Southwest Florida on Pacific time?
A 6:15 pm session in Naples or Fort Myers is 3:15 pm for your mentor, and the latest regular weekday start, 8:00 pm Eastern, is 5:00 pm Pacific.
We spend summers up north. Do we need a new mentor?
No. The mentor stays the same and sessions are scheduled in whatever time zone you are in that week.
Do you meet clients in person in Naples or Fort Myers?
No. Our team is in Los Angeles, the only place we hold in-person sessions. Southwest Florida clients work with their mentor by video.
