Blackburn Mentoring works with Orange County teens (13 and up), college students and young adults by video. Our team is in Los Angeles, the only place we offer in-person sessions, so Orange County clients either meet online or make the trip to LA. Each client has one dedicated mentor and meets weekly or more, with text and phone contact in between.

Why most Orange County clients choose video
On a map, Orange County and Los Angeles look close. On the 405 or the 5 at 4 pm, they are not. An hour or more each way for a 60 minute session rarely makes sense for a high school student with homework and practice, or for a young professional at the end of a workday. Video sessions happen from home, a dorm or the office, and the schedule no longer depends on traffic. Some families start with an in-person meeting in Los Angeles and shift to video once the relationship is established; others never meet in person and find it makes no difference to the work.
What we hear from Orange County parents
Orange County has an active youth sports and beach culture, and parents tend to describe a teenager who is doing a lot and finishing little, or who seems to have everything and still lacks direction. A few patterns come up again and again:
- A student coasting on talent who is starting to fall behind as classes get harder.
- A busy athlete whose schedule leaves no room for planning.
- A senior who is unsure about college and avoiding the topic.
- A graduate living back at home in the county, between plans.
Parents of teens usually start with mentoring for high school students. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors; they are steady, practical guides who help students and young adults follow through.
Orange County by the numbers
These are county-level figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter. Orange County is part of the Los Angeles metro.
- Median owner-occupied home value: $1,037,200 (county). Buying is out of reach for most people in their twenties, which keeps many young adults at home and pushes others inland to Riverside or San Bernardino County.
- Median household income: $115,229 (county). Many families can invest in their kids’ next steps, and they tend to want a clear plan and visible progress.
- 44.7% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (county). College is the default expectation in many households, so a student who is unsure or wants a different route often needs help having that conversation.
- Mean travel time to work: 27.3 minutes (county). Most of that is freeway time, another reason an after-work session from home beats a drive.
- Median age: 40.2 years (county). Many households are established families with teens and young adults at home at the same time.
Orange County at a glance for families and young adults
The county’s economy mixes health care and medical devices, technology and game studios, real estate, design offices and a large tourism and hospitality sector built around Anaheim’s resorts and attractions. North County cities like Fullerton, Yorba Linda and Anaheim feel quite different from planned South County communities like Mission Viejo, Ladera Ranch and San Clemente, where nearly everything requires a car. Little Saigon in Westminster and Garden Grove is home to a large Vietnamese American community.
Most Orange County districts start in mid August and end in early June, so summer jobs wrap up while the rest of the country is still on break. May and June bring gray marine-layer mornings along the coast, summers fill with surf and beach jobs, and resort work offers teens flexible but shifting hours. Many local students start at a community college and transfer, a well-worn and respected path in California.
Situations that come up often in Orange County
- A teen working part time at a resort or attraction whose shifts change every week.
- A community college student planning a transfer who needs to keep requirements and deadlines straight.
- A first-generation student from a Vietnamese American family balancing parental hopes with their own interests.
- A young adult in South County without transit who depends on rides to get to work.
Students on the transfer route can read mentoring for transfer students, and graduates at home may like moving back home after college. For in-person options, see mentoring in Los Angeles.

Common questions
Do you serve Orange County by video and in person?
We serve all of Orange County by video, from Fullerton and Anaheim to Irvine, Newport Beach and San Clemente. In-person sessions take place only in Los Angeles, and a few families combine the two. Most choose video because it avoids the freeway entirely.
Do you come to Newport Beach or Irvine?
We do not hold sessions in Orange County itself. Clients there work with us by video or meet in person in Los Angeles. Our Newport Beach and Irvine page has more detail on that area.
Can a mentor help an Orange County teen with pressure?
Yes. Mentors help a teen who is doing a lot and finishing little build a weekly plan, start work earlier and follow through. Parents of high school students can join the intro call and receive progress updates when needed.
Do you help young adults living at home in Orange County?
Yes. With home values above $1 million, many graduates live with family while they find their footing. A mentor helps turn that time into a plan with a first job that has real prospects, savings toward an apartment and a routine that holds during the week.
Is mentoring the same as tutoring?
No. Mentors help with goals, planning, habits and follow-through. They can coordinate with a tutor the family already uses.
