Mentoring and Coaching in Plano, Frisco and Collin County

If you live in Plano, Frisco, McKinney, Allen or elsewhere in Collin County, you can work with a Blackburn mentor by video. Each person gets one dedicated mentor, regular sessions scheduled in Central time, and text and phone contact in between. We are a Los Angeles team, so all Collin County mentoring is online.

A county that keeps filling in

Collin County has been one of the fastest-growing parts of Texas for years. Corporate campuses along the Dallas North Tollway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway have drawn employers and their families from across the country, and new neighborhoods keep appearing farther north toward Prosper and Celina. Frisco has leaned hard into sports, with stadiums, practice facilities and youth complexes around nearly every corner.

That growth means many families here are relatively new. A lot of teenagers have moved at least once, sometimes across several states, and are still building friendships and a sense of where they fit. Parents may have moved for a company transfer and know they could be moved again, which can make a teen hesitant to invest in new friends.

Plano and Frisco by the numbers

All of these are county-level figures for Collin County, from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey as published by Data USA.

  • 27.5% of Collin County workers worked from home (American Community Survey 2024, via Data USA). In a lot of households at least one parent is on video calls most of the day, so a teen meeting a mentor on a laptop down the hall is a natural fit.
  • The average one-way commute is 28.2 minutes (American Community Survey 2024, via Data USA), much of it on toll roads. Skipping a drive to an appointment protects the one free hour a busy family has on a weeknight.
  • The median household income is $121,600 and the median home value is $475,600 (American Community Survey 2024, via Data USA). Comfortable incomes and high home prices often mean expectations run high and young adults stay home longer after college to save.
  • The poverty rate is 6.23% (American Community Survey 2024, via Data USA). Pressure here is less about access and more about pace, comparison and choosing among too many options.

Session times from Plano and Frisco

Collin County is two hours ahead of Los Angeles. Sessions are scheduled in Central time, and the mentor adjusts on their side.

  • After school: a 5:00 pm session in Plano is 3:00 pm for the mentor; a 6:30 pm slot after club practice is 4:30 pm Pacific.
  • After work: 7:30 pm Central is 5:30 pm Pacific, a good fit for someone driving home from a Legacy West or Tollway office.
  • Early-morning slots before school and weekend sessions are also available, which helps families whose weekdays are taken up by competition seasons.

When a teen is new in town

Moving in middle or high school is hard even when it goes well. Signs a student is still struggling with it:

  • Weekends spent mostly alone or online, months after the move.
  • Grades that dipped after the transfer and have not recovered.
  • Talk about the old town as home, long after the boxes are unpacked.

A mentor helps a student set small social and school goals for each week, such as one club meeting or one conversation with a teacher, and builds from there. Our guide on when a teen has no friends covers the parent side. If low mood lasts for weeks or affects sleep and eating, a licensed professional is the right step. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Club sports, robotics and long evenings

Between club teams, select tournaments, robotics, debate and music lessons, Collin County students can be busy from 6 am to 10 pm. Academic competition runs high, and many teenagers feel strong family hopes about specific careers, often in medicine, engineering or business. Collin County is remarkably diverse, with large South Asian, East Asian, Latino and Middle Eastern communities alongside families who have lived here for generations, and many students balance two sets of expectations. A mentor helps the student map the season, front-load work before tournament weekends and keep sleep from becoming the thing that gives. See mentoring for student athletes for more.

The calendar matters too. Most Texas public schools go back in early to mid-August (state level, 2026 to 27 school year, MDR data via WeAreTeachers), and summer heat keeps activity indoors from June through September. Without a plan, those months can turn screen-heavy; starting with a mentor in July gives a student a routine before the first week of class.

Young professionals on the corporate corridor

Plenty of people in their twenties land in Plano or Frisco for a first job with a large company. The work is steady, but it can feel isolating to live in a new suburb with no network, and many live with family to save money. A mentor helps with the practical pieces: a routine that holds up, a plan for the first year on the job, a budget and a way to build a social life outside the office. Our page on the first 90 days in a new job is a good place to start, and early career mentoring explains how we work with people in their first jobs.

What Collin County families tend to ask

  • A teen expected to pursue medicine or engineering who wants room to explore other interests first.
  • A student whose competition season takes every weekend for months.
  • A young adult living with parents and grandparents while starting a first corporate job.
  • A high schooler under constant pressure about class rank and college lists.

Where a mentor helps

A mentor is not a tutor, therapist or admissions counselor. The job is steady guidance and accountability from someone outside the family. Families with teens usually begin with mentoring for high school students. Read how sessions work on our online mentoring page or see mentoring across Texas. Common questions

Do you serve Plano, Frisco, McKinney and Allen by video?

Yes. Anyone in Collin County, including Prosper, Celina and Wylie, can work with a Blackburn mentor by video. There is no Blackburn office here; our team is in Los Angeles, and in-person sessions happen only there.

What time are sessions for Collin County families?

Sessions are set in Central time. A 5:00 pm after-school session is 3:00 pm for the mentor, and evening sessions up to about 8:00 pm Central work for students and working young adults.

Can mentoring help a high-achieving student with stress?

Yes. A mentor helps the student look at the whole week, decide what to keep and what to drop, and protect sleep. If stress turns into lasting anxiety or low mood, a licensed professional is the right step, and a mentor can work alongside one.

Can sessions work around tournament travel?

Yes. Sessions are online, so they can happen from a hotel room on a travel weekend, as long as there is a quiet space and a connection. The time can also move week to week during a busy season.

How is this different from mentoring in Dallas?

The mentoring itself is the same: one dedicated mentor, video sessions and check-ins between them. What changes is the conversation, which in Collin County more often centers on newcomer adjustment, competitive activities and first corporate jobs. Families anywhere in the metroplex can use either page to get started.
