Blackburn Mentoring works with Sacramento-area clients by video. We are a Los Angeles team, so we share your Pacific time zone; families in Sacramento, Folsom, Roseville, El Dorado Hills, Elk Grove and Davis meet one dedicated mentor online each week. We work with high school students and their parents, college students, young adults and professionals, and in-person sessions in Los Angeles are possible for anyone who visits.
Same time zone, same state
Clients in most other metros work with us across a time difference. Sacramento does not. A 3:45 pm session after school is 3:45 pm for the mentor too, and evenings and weekend mornings line up without any math. Families also tend to appreciate a mentor who knows California: the state university and community college systems, the cost of housing, and how far apart everything is.
How Sacramento-area families live
The region is spread out. Some families are in older city neighborhoods like Land Park, East Sacramento and Curtis Park. Many more are in the suburbs that grew east along Highway 50 and north along I-80, in Folsom, Granite Bay, Roseville, Rocklin and El Dorado Hills, or south in Elk Grove. Davis, to the west, is very much its own college town.
Work here leans on state government, health care, education, and the agriculture and food businesses of the Central Valley, with a growing number of people working remotely for Bay Area employers. That last group often has flexibility during the day and long evenings online, and it changes how a household runs.

- Our junior has no idea what they want and the college conversation keeps turning into an argument.
- Our college student is at a campus a few hours away and we only find out about problems after grades post.

A mentor helps with each of these the same basic way: set clear goals together, break them into steps for the coming week, and check in between sessions so the plan holds.
College students in and from the region
Sacramento has a large state university, a major public research university next door in Davis, and several community colleges that many students use as a path to transfer. A lot of local students also head to the Bay Area, Southern California or out of state. A mentor helps with the habits that decide how college goes: attending class, using office hours, managing money and building a weekly schedule that survives midterms. Valley seasons
Summers in the Sacramento Valley are hot and dry, often well over 100 degrees, and wildfire smoke can keep people indoors for days. Winters bring rain and dense tule fog on some mornings, and Tahoe is close enough for weekend trips. Sessions continue through all of it, from home, a cabin or a dorm.
Visiting Los Angeles
Los Angeles is a short flight or a long day’s drive down I-5. Most Sacramento clients work with us only by video, but families who are in Los Angeles for a visit, a college tour or work can meet their mentor in person. Our Los Angeles mentoring page describes in-person sessions.
Where a mentor helps
A mentor is one consistent adult who meets weekly and keeps the plan honest, not a tutor, therapist or admissions counselor. Families with teenagers usually start with mentoring for high school students. More on video sessions is on our online mentoring page.

Yes. Our team is in Los Angeles, so Sacramento clients share our time zone and sessions are scheduled at the same clock time for both sides.
Can we ever meet in person?
Sessions for Sacramento clients are online. If you are in Los Angeles, an in-person session with your mentor can be arranged.
Do you work with students at community college?
Yes. We work with community college students, including those planning to transfer, and the weekly structure suits that path well.
