Blackburn Mentoring works by video with families and young adults in Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Truckee, Incline Village and around Lake Tahoe. Each client has one dedicated mentor, meets weekly or several times a week, and gets text and phone check-ins between sessions. The whole region shares Pacific time with our Los Angeles team, so scheduling is simple.
A region that changed fast
Reno spent most of the twentieth century known for casinos and quick divorces. Over the last fifteen years it has become something else: a hub for manufacturing, logistics, batteries and data centers east of town, plus a steady flow of people relocating from the Bay Area and Sacramento. Midtown filled with restaurants, and the Truckee River became a place to spend an afternoon.
Fast growth brings opportunity and strain. Housing got expensive. Many families are new, and some students changed schools mid-stream. Young adults have more job options than their parents did, especially in skilled trades and technical roles, and also more choices to sort through.
Trades, technical paths and college
Northern Nevada is a good place to think broadly about what comes after high school. Apprenticeships, technical certificates, community college and four-year degrees are all real paths here. A mentor helps a student compare them honestly:

- How long is the training, and what does it cost in time and money?
- Who can you talk to who does this work now?
- What is a small step to test the idea this month?

Two states, one lake
Lake Tahoe straddles the California and Nevada line, and families on the north and south shores often live in one state and work, shop or go to school in another. Mountain winters can close roads and cancel school; summers bring visitors by the thousands. Teens in Truckee or Incline Village often grow up in small towns, where asking for help can feel very public. A mentor who meets by video sits outside that circle.
Same time zone, easy rhythm
Because Reno and Tahoe are on Pacific time, a 4 pm session after school is 4 pm for the mentor too. Early mornings before a shift, lunch breaks and evenings are all easy. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, on a weekly or monthly plan, and they continue during snow days, travel and summer jobs.
For young adults working shifts
A lot of young adults in the Reno area work in warehouses, hospitality, gaming or health care, often on rotating or overnight shifts. Shift work can pay well and still leave a person without a plan. Where a mentor helps
Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors. They help people set goals, plan the week and follow through, and with permission they keep parents informed. Do you meet clients in person in Reno or Tahoe?
No. Clients here work with their mentor by video. In-person meetings are available in Los Angeles for anyone who is there.
Can a mentor help my teen choose between a trade and college?
Yes. Mentors help students research options, talk with people in the field and test ideas. They do not provide admissions advice.
What if my son works overnight shifts?
Sessions can be scheduled at whatever time fits, and check-ins happen by text around the shift schedule.
