High school asks a lot of students: harder classes, college planning, activities, social pressure and growing independence, often all at once. Blackburn Mentoring pairs a high school student with one dedicated mentor who meets with them by video weekly or several times a week, with text and phone contact in between, helps them get organized and motivated, and keeps parents in the loop. Mentoring is available to families anywhere in the United States.
What high school students work on
- Organization, planners and keeping track of assignments
- Study routines and preparing for tests
- Motivation, follow-through and building confidence
- Balancing school, sports, activities and rest
- Getting ready for college: planning, applications timelines and independence
- Life skills: managing time, money, a schedule and responsibilities
- Healthy habits around sleep, screens and routines
A mentor is not a parent, and that helps
Teenagers often take the same advice better from someone who is not their parent. A mentor is an older, steady presence who the student can talk to honestly, who expects them to follow through and who celebrates progress. Parents get to step back from being the reminder, the pusher and the checker.
How parents are involved
- A parent or guardian signs up and joins the free intro call
- Goals are agreed with both the student and the parents
- Sessions are scheduled with the family, in your local time
- Parents receive regular progress updates
- Parents can reach the team with questions or concerns at any time
What mentoring is not
Mentors are not tutors, therapists or college admissions counselors. They work alongside the school, counselors and any other professionals in the student’s life. If a student is struggling with their mental health, a licensed professional is the right first step. In a crisis, call or text 988.
How to start
- Take a short assessment. Tell us about the student or yourself and the goals. It takes about five minutes.
- Have a free intro call. Our team reviews it personally and sets up a short call.
- Meet the mentor. We match each person with a mentor whose experience and style fit.
- Start the plan. 30 or 60 minute video sessions on a weekly or monthly plan, scheduled in your local time.
