Blackburn Mentoring gives students in Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights one dedicated mentor who helps with planning, routines, follow through and confidence, mostly by video with in person sessions in Los Angeles when they help. Parents of high school students can join the free 20 minute intro call and get regular, plain language updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise outcomes; they help students take charge of their own week.
The school and family picture
Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights are unincorporated communities in the Puente Hills, served mainly by two public districts: Hacienda La Puente Unified in Hacienda Heights, which reported 15,148 students in 2025 to 2026, and Rowland Unified in Rowland Heights, which reported 13,514 (California Department of Education district profiles). Both districts also serve neighboring communities, so families should check their address. We also work with students at independent and parochial schools and with college students living at home.
Both communities are more multilingual than Los Angeles County as a whole. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 72.6% of Rowland Heights residents and 66.0% of Hacienda Heights residents speak a language other than English at home, and 55.6% and 41.3% were born outside the United States, compared with 55.1% and 33.4% countywide (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). In many households the student is the family’s guide to the American high school and college system.
What students and parents here bring to a mentor
- Being the family’s navigator. Students who translate school emails and forms for their parents carry extra weight. A mentor shares some of that load and keeps parents informed in plain terms.
- Course and college planning. The University of California and California State University A to G subject requirements, honors and AP choices and dual enrollment, laid out a year at a time. See the four year high school plan.
- First generation college students. Applications, financial aid deadlines and the first year on campus, step by step. See mentoring for first generation college students.
- Executive function skills. Starting assignments, estimating time and keeping track of everything in one place. See executive function coaching.
- Living at home in college. Commuting to campus while helping at home needs a schedule that respects both. See community college mentoring.
Working with the whole family
The weekly plan belongs to the student, and parents stay in the loop. On the intro call the family agrees the goals together; after that, parents get regular updates on progress rather than a list of every grade. When the family wants it, the mentor coordinates with the school counselor so the plan at home matches the plan at school. See working with your school counselor.
In person or by video
Our team is based in Los Angeles. Hacienda Heights and Rowland Heights sit along the 60 near the 57, a long drive from the city on a school night, so most students meet by video and add in person sessions in Los Angeles when they help, at a convenient, appropriate place agreed on the intro call. Evening and weekend times are available.
