Mentoring and Coaching in the San Gabriel Valley

Blackburn Mentoring serves the San Gabriel Valley, including Arcadia, Alhambra and the San Marino area, with one dedicated mentor per client, meeting in person in Los Angeles or by video. Students and young adults set clear goals, break them into weekly steps and keep in touch with their mentor between sessions by text and phone.

Foothills, main streets and a lot of freeway

The San Gabriel Valley stretches east from Pasadena under the San Gabriel Mountains. Arcadia is home to the racetrack and the county arboretum. San Marino, on the edge, is quiet and residential, with the Huntington Library and gardens. Alhambra has a walkable Main Street and sits close to downtown. The 10 and the 210 run east to west, and the Metro A Line serves the foothill cities.

Getting anywhere means planning around traffic, which shapes the week for parents and students alike. A session that does not require a drive is often the one that actually happens.

Where a mentor fits

Families do not usually need more advice. They need someone to help the plan happen. A mentor focuses on the practical layer:

  • Time and routines. A weekly plan that makes room for school, sleep, activities and rest (teen time management)
  • Follow-through. Turning good intentions into specific actions and checking on them midweek
  • Independence. Helping a teenager or young adult take ownership, so a parent does not have to be the reminder system (how much independence a teenager needs)
  • Direction. Exploring careers, majors or a gap year with real research instead of guesswork (gap year mentoring)
  • Work and money. A first job, a budget and early career steps for young adults (young adult mentoring)

Working with families

For high school students, a parent or guardian joins the intro call, helps set the goals and receives regular progress updates. For college students and young adults, updates go to family only with the client’s permission. More at mentoring for families and how parent progress updates work.

When a student is worn down

Any student can burn out quietly, whether they are overloaded or have simply stopped trying. Signs include poor sleep, avoiding schoolwork they used to enjoy and pulling back from friends. A mentor can help rebalance the week, but if a student seems anxious, depressed or overwhelmed, a licensed professional is the right step, and a mentor can coordinate with them with permission. Meeting from the Valley

The western San Gabriel Valley is close enough for in-person meetings in Los Angeles when they help, and video sessions make weeknights easy. Sessions can move around activities and family events. Nearby, see mentoring in Pasadena, mentoring in Claremont and Pomona and mentoring in Los Angeles.

Common questions

Can the plan change during the school year?

Yes. Goals are reviewed every session, so the plan can shift for a new semester, a busy season or a setback.

Is this tutoring or test prep?

No. Mentors do not teach subjects or prepare students for tests. They help with planning, routines and follow-through.

Can sessions work around a packed activity schedule?

Yes. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes and are scheduled around school, activities and family commitments.

Do you help with college admissions?

Mentors are not admissions counselors. They help students stay organized and meet their own deadlines, and can work alongside a counselor the family already uses.
