Blackburn Mentoring gives students in Agoura Hills and Westlake Village one dedicated mentor for planning, routines, follow through and confidence, mostly by video with in person sessions in Los Angeles when they help. For high school students a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call, agree the goals and receive regular updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise grades; they help capable students manage a full week without nightly reminders.
The school picture at the western edge of the county
On the Los Angeles County side, Agoura Hills and Westlake Village are served by the Las Virgenes Unified School District, the same district as Calabasas and Hidden Hills, while neighbors across the line in Ventura County attend Conejo Valley schools. We also work with students at independent and parochial schools.
Both cities are family places with highly educated parents. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that 22.7% of Agoura Hills residents are under 18 and 67.5% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher; in Westlake Village the bachelor’s figure is 63.8%, against 36.0% across Los Angeles County (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024).
What students here bring to a mentor
- Suburban quiet, packed calendars. Sports, activities and advanced classes spread across a wide area with long drives between them. A mentor builds one plan that includes the drive time.
- Executive function skills. Starting assignments early, breaking down long projects and estimating time. See executive function coaching.
- Pressure to keep up. When classmates seem to be doing everything, a mentor helps a student choose what matters and protect sleep.
- Fire season disruptions. Red flag days, evacuations and smoke can scramble a school week. A mentor helps students rebuild the routine quickly afterward.
- The jump to college. Many students leave for large campuses far from a quiet suburb. See college transition mentoring.
Parents informed, students in charge
The mentor becomes the person who asks what is due and what got done, so home can be about something else. Parents agree the goals on the intro call and get regular progress updates, and with the family’s permission the mentor coordinates with the school counselor or learning specialist.
In person or by video
Our team is based in Los Angeles. Agoura Hills and Westlake Village sit along the 101 at the far western edge of the county, so most students meet by video on school nights and add in person sessions in Los Angeles when it is worth the drive, at a convenient, appropriate place agreed on the intro call. Early morning, evening and weekend times are available.
