Mentoring for Las Virgenes USD Students

Blackburn Mentoring gives Las Virgenes Unified students one mentor who helps them plan a demanding week, keep A to G courses on track and follow through, mostly by video with in person sessions in Los Angeles when they help. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students and get regular updates.

Las Virgenes Unified at a glance

Las Virgenes Unified serves the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and Westlake Village, according to the district profile published by the Ventura County Office of Education. It enrolled 9,923 students in 2025 to 2026 according to Ed-Data. The district sits in Los Angeles County at the edge of Ventura County, so many families live one county and work in another, and the 101 shapes every afternoon.

Graduation requirements and course rigor

Students who take on advanced coursework, including AP and dual enrollment options where offered, need a plan that holds across the whole year, not just the first month. The district’s high schools publish the graduation requirements for each class; the state minimums are listed by the California Department of Education.

One thing every Las Virgenes family should know: finishing the district’s graduation requirements and being eligible for the University of California or California State University are not the same test. UC asks for 15 A to G courses with a grade of C or better, at least 11 of them done before senior year, and a 3.0 GPA for California residents, according to UC Admissions. Our free A to G checker and UC and CSU GPA calculator let a student see where they stand in a few minutes, and a mentor turns the gaps into a semester plan.

Calendar notes for Las Virgenes families

Dates change every year, so always use the official calendar posted by Las Virgenes Unified. A mentor builds the plan around the district’s grading periods rather than the week a report card arrives: the first four weeks of a semester, the run up to progress reports, finals and the return from winter and spring break are the moments to plan ahead for. For application windows, test dates and AP exams, see our school year calendar for Los Angeles families.

How mentoring supports Las Virgenes students

  • Advanced course loads. Several AP or college level courses at once reward students who plan backward from exam and project dates. A mentor builds that calendar with the student.
  • Dual enrollment. A college course has a different rhythm: fewer reminders, bigger assignments, a separate portal. Mentors help students track both systems. See dual enrollment explained.
  • Commutes and activities. Practices, rehearsals and family travel across the valley need a realistic weekly plan.
  • Fire season disruption. Evacuations and closures interrupt routines in canyon communities. A mentor helps a student restart quickly with a short catch up plan.

Can a mentor help a student taking several AP classes?

Yes. Mentors help with the planning: mapping exam and project dates, breaking work into weekly steps and protecting sleep. A tutor handles course content if needed.
