Mentoring for Students in Eagle Rock and Highland Park

Blackburn Mentoring gives Eagle Rock and Highland Park students one dedicated mentor who helps them plan the week, build routines and follow through, in person in Los Angeles or by video. For high school students a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call and get regular updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise grades; they help students turn good intentions into a week that works.

The school picture in Northeast Los Angeles

Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mount Washington and Glassell Park are served by the Los Angeles Unified School District (497,105 students in 2025 to 2026, Ed-Data). Families here can weigh a neighborhood school against LAUSD’s magnet, dual language and other choice programs, and we also work with students at charter, independent and parochial schools.

Northeast LA is a mix of longtime families and newer arrivals, hillside streets and busy commercial corridors along Colorado Boulevard and York Boulevard. That variety shows up in what families ask for.

What students here bring to a mentor

  • Choosing and settling into a school. After a move to a magnet or another program across the district, a student needs new routines fast. See magnet schools explained.
  • Creative students and structure. Artists, musicians and makers who need just enough planning to keep schoolwork moving. See executive function coaching.
  • First generation college planning. A to G requirements, applications and financial aid deadlines, step by step. See first generation college students.
  • Attention and organization. Systems that work for students with ADHD or similar profiles. See mentoring for students with ADHD; mentors support skills, not treatment.
  • College students at home. Commuting, working and keeping a semester on track. See mentoring for college students.
