Mentoring for Students in South Pasadena

Blackburn Mentoring gives South Pasadena students one dedicated mentor who helps with planning, routines, follow through and confidence, in person in Los Angeles or by video. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students and get regular progress updates. Mentors do not tutor or promise grades; they help students build the habits that make a demanding school week work.

The school picture in South Pasadena

South Pasadena is a small city with its own public school system, the South Pasadena Unified School District, which enrolled 4,679 students in 2025 to 2026 according to Ed-Data, the K to 12 data partnership that includes the California Department of Education. In a district this size, students tend to know everyone in their grade from elementary school on, which brings real community and also a sense that everyone is watching how you are doing.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 24.3% of South Pasadena residents are under 18 (county: 19.2%) and 73.5% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (county: 36.0%), with 37.7% speaking a language other than English at home (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). It is a town built around families and schools, and the academic bar is set high early.

What South Pasadena families bring to a mentor

  • A strong student who is running out of steam. Heavy course loads plus music, sports and service hours, and sleep is what gives. A mentor helps choose, schedule and protect rest.
  • Middle school to high school. The jump in workload and independence is where executive function gaps show up. See executive function coaching.
  • Attention and organization challenges. Students with ADHD or similar profiles need systems, not lectures. See mentoring for students with ADHD; mentors support skills and do not provide treatment.
  • Junior and senior year. A plan for courses, A to G requirements, summers and deadlines, so the year is not one long scramble. See the junior year guide.
  • The first year away. Students who leave for college often keep their mentor by video. See college transition mentoring.

A small town that is easy to get around

South Pasadena is compact and walkable, with Mission Street at its center and a Metro A Line station that connects students to Pasadena and downtown Los Angeles. That makes it one of the easier places in the county for a teenager to build real independence: getting to a job, a class or an appointment without a parent driving. A mentor can turn that into practice, with the student planning trips, managing time and handling their own commitments.

Common questions

What ages do you work with?

High school students, college students and young adults, with a parent involved throughout for high school students. Ninth grade is often the best time to build planning and organization habits, before the later years of high school raise the stakes.

Can my student meet a mentor in person?

Yes. South Pasadena is close to central Los Angeles, and in person sessions happen at a convenient, appropriate place agreed on the intro call. Video works too.

Is this tutoring or college counseling?

No. Mentors help with planning, routines, follow through and confidence. They can work alongside a tutor, the school counselor or an independent consultant.

Will you talk to my student’s teachers?

When the family wants that, the mentor coordinates with the school team so everyone works from the same plan.
