Blackburn Mentoring serves families across South Orange County, from San Clemente and Dana Point to Mission Viejo, Laguna Niguel, San Juan Capistrano and Ladera Ranch. Each student or young adult works with one dedicated mentor by video on planning, routines and follow through, with text and phone check ins between weekly sessions. For students under 18 a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call and receive regular updates.
One large district across many towns
Most of South Orange County is served by a single public school system. Capistrano Unified School District covers about 200 square miles, including San Clemente, Dana Point, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel, Aliso Viejo, Mission Viejo and Rancho Santa Margarita, plus communities such as Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza and Rancho Mission Viejo. It enrolled 46,429 students in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. Students in a district that large may move between campuses, programs and boundary lines more than families expect, and newer master planned communities can mean a long drive to a school, a practice field or a job.
San Clemente, at the southern end, gives a sense of the area. The U.S. Census Bureau counts 62,226 residents in 2025, with 20.8% under 18 and 53.8% of adults 25 and older holding a bachelor’s degree or higher; the city is also home to 2,476 veterans (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024).
What South Orange County families bring to a mentor
- Long commutes inside the county. Practice in one town, school in another and a job in a third. A mentor helps a student build a weekly plan that accounts for real drive time.
- Military connected families. With Camp Pendleton just to the south, some families expect a move or a parent away for long stretches. A mentor by video stays the same through a move. See mentoring for military families.
- High achievers running out of steam. A student who has always done well and now feels flat often needs a smaller plan, not a bigger one. Our guide to gifted kid burnout explains the pattern.
- College students and recent graduates. A mentor helps with the first year away, a summer home, a change of major or a first job search. See mentoring for college students.
How sessions work from South Orange County
South Orange County is a long drive from our Los Angeles base, so clients here meet by video. Sessions fit before school, after practice or late in the evening, and mentors also offer weekend times. In person meetings take place only in Los Angeles. Families farther north may find our pages on Laguna Beach and Newport Beach and Irvine useful. Families anywhere in Southern California can also see our Southern California areas page.

Can the mentor stay the same if our family moves?
Yes. Because sessions are by video, a student keeps the same mentor through a move anywhere in the country.

Yes. We work with high school and college students, young adults and professionals. A parent is part of the plan for students under 18.
Is this tutoring?
No. Mentors help with planning, routines, follow through and confidence. A mentor can work alongside a tutor when a student needs help with course content.
