Blackburn Mentoring works with Carlsbad students, young adults and professionals through one dedicated mentor who meets them by video every week. The mentor helps set two or three goals, turns them into weekly steps and checks in by text and phone between sessions. For students under 18 a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call and get regular updates.
Carlsbad schools and families
Carlsbad is a family city. The U.S. Census Bureau counts 112,260 residents in 2025, with 23.4% under 18, and 62.1% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Most of the city is served by Carlsbad Unified School District, which enrolled 10,683 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. Some southern and eastern neighborhoods fall in other districts, including the San Dieguito Union High School District, so the right district depends on the address.
The city also has a large military connected population: about 6,040 veterans live in Carlsbad, according to the same Census data, and Camp Pendleton sits just to the north.
What Carlsbad families bring to a mentor
- Busy, active students. Club sports, surf, music and jobs in a city built around being outside. A mentor builds a weekly plan that protects school work and sleep. See mentoring for student athletes.
- Military families. A parent away or a move ahead. The same mentor continues by video wherever the family goes. See mentoring for military families.
- College students far from home, or back home. Help through the first year, a change of major or a summer in Carlsbad without a plan. See when a college student comes home for break.
- Young professionals. People early in careers in North County use a mentor for goals, structure and accountability. See coaching for professionals.
How sessions work from Carlsbad
Carlsbad is a long way down the 5 from our Los Angeles base, so clients here meet by video. Sessions fit before school, after practice, at lunch or in the evening, and mentors offer weekend times. In person meetings take place only in Los Angeles. Families a little farther south may want our page on Del Mar, Solana Beach and Rancho Santa Fe. Families anywhere in Southern California can also see our Southern California areas page.
How to start
- Take a short assessment. Tell us about the student or young adult and the goals. It takes about five minutes.
- Have a free 20 minute intro call. For high school students, a parent is welcome to join. We talk through fit, schedule and how sessions would work from Carlsbad.
- Meet the mentor. New clients are matched with one mentor within two business days.
- Start the plan. 60 minute video sessions, weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check ins between them.
For district details, see our guides to mentoring for Carlsbad USD students and, for parts of southern Carlsbad, mentoring for San Dieguito UHSD students.
