Blackburn Mentoring offers families in Ogden, Layton and the rest of Davis and Weber counties one-on-one mentoring and coaching by video for teens 13 and up, college students and young adults. Sessions are scheduled in Mountain time.
Blackburn Mentoring works with families and young adults in Ogden, Layton, Kaysville, Bountiful and the rest of Weber and Davis counties by video. Our team is in Los Angeles, and northern Utah clients meet one dedicated mentor online every week on Mountain time, with text and phone check-ins between sessions. We work with high school students and their parents, college students, young adults starting out and adults rethinking a career.
Session times from Ogden
Northern Utah sits one hour ahead of our mentors, and the gap never changes because both states move their clocks together. A sample week:
- After school: a 3:30 pm session in Layton is 2:30 pm PT, and 4:30 pm is 3:30 pm PT.
- After a day shift: 6:00 pm in Ogden is 5:00 pm in California; 8:00 pm Mountain is 7:00 pm PT.
- Swing and night shifts: mentors offer early-morning sessions, so 7:00 am Mountain (6:00 am PT) works for someone coming off a night on the line.
- Weekends: Saturday and Sunday sessions are open, including for families with a parent on a duty rotation.
Military, aerospace and the families around them
A large Air Force installation and the aerospace and defense contractors that cluster around it shape much of daily life between Ogden and Layton. Many families arrive on orders, and many civilians build long careers in maintenance, engineering and logistics. That brings two kinds of requests. Military teens need continuity when they change schools, and young adults want to know how to get from a high school diploma to a skilled job on or near the base.
Because sessions are online, a mentor who starts with a teen in Davis County keeps working with them after the next move, in the new local time. Our page on mentoring for military families covers how that works.
Ogden by the numbers
- A median household income of about $98,400 (Ogden metro). That is the highest of the three Wasatch Front metros, a sign of how many steady technical and government jobs are here, and why a skilled-trade or base career is a serious option for a graduate (Census ACS 5-year estimates, as published by World Population Review).
- 34.2 percent of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (metro). Most adults here built careers through other routes, so a mentor treats college, an apprenticeship, the military and direct work as equal options to compare (same source).
- A median home value of about $437,700 (metro). Homes cost less here than in the Salt Lake City or Provo metros, so plenty of young families settle north and commute, and mentoring often focuses on a realistic plan to buy (same source).
- About 672,800 people, 88th among US metros (metro). The metro is big enough to have its own job market, yet close enough that many residents work in Salt Lake County (U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 population estimates, as tabulated by StatRanker).
Choosing between college and work
The most common question we hear from northern Utah families is not which college, but whether college at all. A graduate might have an offer for a manufacturing job, a path into aircraft maintenance, a chance to enlist, or a spot at a local university or technical college. Each can be a good choice. A mentor helps lay them side by side with real numbers: training time, pay now and later, what a typical week looks like. Students leaning toward hands-on work can read mentoring for trade school students.
Teens in Davis and Weber counties
Davis County families tend to be busy and large, with kids in sports, music and church activities and parents commuting south on I-15 or Legacy Parkway. A mentor gives one student their own weekly time to set goals, organize schoolwork and build follow-through, without adding a drive. A parent can join the intro call, help agree the goals and receive updates when needed. Utah districts typically open in mid to late August, so starting in July gives a teen time to settle into a routine. In Weber County, plenty of teens hold an early job, take classes toward a trade certificate or plan to stay close to home after graduation. A mentor helps them make that plan on purpose.
Snow, shifts and a short drive to the mountains
Ogden sits right against the Wasatch, and the ski areas up Ogden Canyon fill winter weekends, while lake-effect storms off the Great Salt Lake can dump snow on the east bench and close roads. Shift work is normal here, in plants, on the base and in hospitals, so a young adult’s week may look nothing like a nine-to-five. Sessions can be booked week by week around a rotating schedule. A mentor is not a tutor, therapist or admissions counselor; it is a steady guide for goals and follow-through.

Common questions
Do you serve Ogden, Layton and Davis County by video?
Yes. We work with clients across Weber and Davis counties, including Ogden, Layton, Kaysville, Farmington, Bountiful, Clearfield and Roy. All sessions are by video; in-person mentoring is offered only in Los Angeles.
What time are sessions in Mountain Time?
Sessions are booked in Mountain time, one hour ahead of our mentors all year. A 4:30 pm after-school session is 3:30 pm in California, and early-morning, evening and weekend options make it possible to work around shifts.
Can a mentor help a military family teen near Ogden?
Yes. A mentor helps a teen settle into a new school, rebuild routines and keep goals steady while a parent is deployed or on long duty days. If the family moves again, the same mentor continues by video in the new time zone.
Can a mentor help a young adult choose between college and work?
Yes. Mentors help compare college, trade training, the military and direct work using real details like training time, pay and daily routine. The young adult makes the call; the mentor makes sure it is an informed one.
Where can I find a one-on-one mentor for my teen in Ogden?
Call (888) 305-5422 or book a free 20 minute intro call. Blackburn Mentoring pairs teens 13 and up and young adults in Ogden with one dedicated mentor who meets them by video weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check-ins between sessions, and new clients are matched within 2 business days. Our guide to finding a mentor for your son or daughter compares the other routes as well.
How does virtual mentoring work for families in Ogden?
Each client works with one dedicated mentor by video, weekly or several times a week. Northern Utah families often have a student at college down the valley or out of state, and a video mentor can stay with them in both places. The same mentor can continue through school breaks, a move or a semester away. Sessions are booked in Mountain time, one hour ahead of our Los Angeles team, and weekend sessions are available. See how virtual mentoring works.
Where can I find help for a young adult with failure to launch in Ogden?
In Davis and Weber counties, a young adult who has not started work, school or a mission can feel stuck while peers move on. Blackburn Mentoring works one-on-one by video with young adults who are stuck at home, building daily structure, a plan for work or school and steady follow-through. Start with what can help when an adult son won’t leave the house, compare the main programs for struggling young adults, and read our failure to launch parent guide.
