Looking for a life coach or mentor in La Cañada Flintridge? Blackburn Mentoring pairs each client with one dedicated mentor who meets by video or in person in Los Angeles. Goals are set together, broken into weekly steps and checked on between sessions by text and phone, so a student or young adult always knows what comes next.
A small foothill city with big expectations
La Cañada Flintridge is a quiet residential city tucked against the San Gabriel Mountains, between Pasadena and Glendale along the 210. It is a small community where school, sports and activities take up much of family life, and expectations can run high.
Not every student finds that easy. A student who has always done well can hit a wall in high school or the first year of college. Another may be doing fine on paper and quietly exhausted. When everyone around you seems to be thriving, it can be hard for a family to say out loud that something is off.
Where a mentor can help
- A teenager who is capable and burning out, or capable and checked out (senior year slump)
- A student who has never had to build study habits because school came easily, and now needs them (executive function skills)
- A first-year college student who is struggling away from home and not saying much (college transition mentoring)
- A young adult back home after college with no clear direction (moving back home after college)
Balance, not more pressure
A mentor here is rarely the person pushing harder. More often the work is about sustainable habits: sleep, a realistic weekly plan, saying no to a few things and choosing goals that the student actually cares about. When a teen has been told what to do for years, setting their own goals and following through on them is often the most useful skill they can build.
For high school students, a parent or guardian is always involved: you join the intro call, agree the goals and receive regular updates. With permission, mentors coordinate with professionals already working with your child. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors.
Mountains on one side, a freeway on the other
The city is compact, but it is up the hill from most of Los Angeles, and teens without a license depend on parents for rides. So the weekly rhythm usually runs by video, with in-person meetings in Los Angeles when they help, for example a walk or a hike. Students who leave for college keep the same mentor by video, scheduled in their local time zone.

Common questions
My student gets good grades. Is mentoring still useful?
Often, yes. Strong students can still struggle with balance, sleep, direction or the jump to college, and a mentor helps with those.
Will the mentor help with college applications?
Mentors help with planning and deadlines, but they are not admissions counselors and do not advise on admissions strategy.
Can the same mentor continue after high school?
Yes. Many students keep their mentor by video through the first year of college.
How involved are parents?
For high school students, parents join the intro call, agree goals and get regular updates. For adults, updates are shared only with permission.
