Mentoring for Santa Barbara Unified Students and Families

Blackburn Mentoring gives Santa Barbara Unified students one mentor who meets with them by video, helps them plan the week and keeps the plan moving between sessions. Santa Barbara Unified asks more of students than coursework alone, with service hours and a long range plan built into graduation, and a mentor helps a student spread that work across four years instead of finding it in the spring of senior year. A parent can join the free 20 minute intro call for high school students, agree the goals and get regular updates.

Sessions for families in this area happen by video. In person sessions are available in Los Angeles for families who are there.

Santa Barbara Unified at a glance

Santa Barbara Unified enrolled 13,065 students in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. It serves Santa Barbara and Goleta, and it became one unified district on July 1, 2011, when the board combined the city’s separate elementary and secondary districts, according to its Wikipedia entry. Students from some neighboring elementary districts move into Santa Barbara Unified for grades 7 to 12; Goleta Union students, for example, continue to its junior highs and high schools, according to the Goleta Union entry.

That means many seventh graders arrive from a different district, with different routines and a different gradebook system, at the same moment they start having several teachers. When high school brings a heavier load, a mentor helps a student build one planning habit that works from the first week.

Graduation requirements: more than credits

The district’s graduation requirements page lists 220 credits, including 40 in English, 30 in math, 20 in science, 30 in social studies, 10 in visual or performing arts or world language, a 20 credit flexible pool, 20 in physical education, 5 in family health and 45 in electives. It also lists:

  • A 5 credit ethnic studies course, required beginning with the class of 2024 (see the district’s ethnic studies page).
  • 60 hours of community service or unpaid internship, or a combination of both, ideally tied to a career pathway.
  • A 10 year college and career readiness plan, completed before the start of tenth grade.

The service hours and the 10 year plan are where students most often get caught, because nobody chases them week to week. A mentor helps a student find service that fits their interests, log hours as they go and treat the 10 year plan as a real document they come back to, not a form. Confirm current requirements for your student’s class with the counselor, and see the state minimums from the California Department of Education.

One thing every Santa Barbara Unified family should know: finishing the district’s graduation requirements and being eligible for the University of California or California State University are not the same test. UC asks for 15 A to G courses with a grade of C or better, at least 11 of them done before senior year, and a 3.0 GPA for California residents, according to UC Admissions. Our free A to G checker and UC and CSU GPA calculator let a student see where they stand in a few minutes, and a mentor turns the gaps into a semester plan.

Tech with Intent: what changed this school year

Santa Barbara Unified started the 2026 to 2027 school year on August 19 with a new focus on more deliberate device use, reported by the Santa Barbara Independent: personal devices off and away all day at a junior high with phone pouches, restrictions on personal devices at the high schools, video sites blocked at the high schools, no free tablet time and a move back toward pencil and paper in classrooms.

For many students that is a welcome change. It also shifts more planning to paper and to home, and students who relied on a phone for reminders need a new system. A mentor helps a student set up a paper or simple digital planner that works within the rules and a home routine that keeps screens from swallowing homework time.

How mentoring supports Santa Barbara students

  • Starting high school. A weekly planning routine for ninth graders, including students who first joined from a neighboring elementary district.
  • Service hours and the 10 year plan. Broken into small steps across ninth and tenth grade, with hours logged as they happen.
  • Planning without a phone. A planner and reminders that work with the district’s device rules.
  • A to G checkpoints. Each spring the mentor and student compare next year’s schedule with UC and CSU requirements.
  • Families between Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Video sessions keep the plan steady, and in person sessions are possible when the family is in Los Angeles.
