Mentoring for Students and Young Adults in San Diego and La Jolla

Blackburn Mentoring works with students, young adults and professionals in San Diego and La Jolla through one dedicated mentor who meets them by video every week. The mentor helps them choose two or three goals, turn them into weekly steps and follow through, with text and phone check ins between sessions. For students under 18 a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call, agree the goals and get regular updates.

A very large district and a very large city

San Diego is a very big city, with 1,406,106 residents in 2025 according to the U.S. Census Bureau. About 18.4% are under 18, 51.0% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, and the city is home to 70,280 veterans (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024). Most of the city, including La Jolla, is served by San Diego Unified School District, which enrolled 112,250 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data.

In a district that size, families often weigh neighborhood schools against magnet, choice and charter options, and against independent schools across the county. Each path has its own application timeline, commute and workload, and a student who switches paths partway through has to rebuild routines. A mentor helps a student plan around whichever path the family chooses.

La Jolla families

La Jolla is a neighborhood of the City of San Diego, not a separate city, so its public schools are part of San Diego Unified. Families here often carry high academic expectations and full calendars: honors and AP courses, ocean sports, music and research or science activities. The work for a mentor is usually not motivation but load: building one weekly plan, protecting sleep and helping a capable student notice early when the plan is breaking down. Our guide to gifted kid burnout explains what that looks like.

  • Young professionals. People early in careers in San Diego use a mentor for goals, structure and accountability. See coaching for professionals.
