Motivation coaching for teens pairs an unmotivated teenager with a mentor who helps them find goals they actually care about and then take small, steady steps toward them. Blackburn matches each teen with one dedicated mentor who meets weekly or more, by video anywhere in the United States or in person in Los Angeles, and checks in between sessions so effort builds week after week.
Who motivation coaching is for
Parents usually find us after months of reminders, rewards and consequences that have not worked. The situations sound like this:
- A teen who has checked out of school and does the minimum, or less.
- A bright student whose grades no longer match their ability; see gifted teens underachieving.
- A teen who seems bored all the time and spends most free time on a phone or games.
- A son or daughter with no plans for after high school and no interest in making any.
- A teen whose comfortable life makes effort feel optional; see raising motivated teens when money is not tight.
- A senior coasting toward graduation; see the senior year slump.
When low motivation needs more than coaching
Sometimes a lack of motivation is a sign of something else: depression, anxiety, a learning difference, substance use or a problem with sleep. Warning signs include withdrawing from friends, sleeping much of the day, big changes in eating, or talk of hopelessness. If you see these, start with your teen’s doctor or a licensed therapist. A mentor can be added alongside that care; see therapy and mentoring together. In a crisis, call or text 988, or call 911.
Why a mentor can reach a teen when parents cannot
By the time most parents reach out, every talk about school sounds like a lecture to their teen, even when it is not meant that way. A mentor starts fresh. They are not the person who takes the phone away, and they ask what the teen wants instead of telling them what they should want. Motivation tends to grow from that: a goal that belongs to the teen, a first small win and someone who notices it.
This does not replace your role. You still set house rules and expectations. The mentor works on the teen’s own goals and the habits that get them there.
What motivation coaching looks like week to week
- One dedicated mentor. The same person every week, matched to your teen’s personality and interests.
- Find what matters to them. Early sessions focus on interests, strengths and what your teen wants their life to look like, even if the first answer is “I don’t know.”
- Small goals first. A goal that can be met this week builds momentum faster than a big one. See goal setting for teens.
- Weekly steps. Each session ends with a few specific actions, and the next one starts by looking at how they went, without judgment.
- Check-ins between sessions. Short texts or calls on the days that usually slip.
- Sessions that fit. Sessions are usually 60 minutes, weekly or several times a week. Cost is reviewed on the free intro call.
How parents are involved
Parents of high school students are part of the plan. You share your concerns on the intro call and receive regular progress updates on attendance and progress. Your teen also needs some privacy with the mentor to build trust, so updates focus on goals and effort rather than every detail of a conversation.
If your teen does not want help, that is common. Invite them to the free intro call just to see what it is like, and present it as their choice. Our guide, does my teenager need a mentor, covers how to raise it.
Questions to ask any coach for your teen
- Who exactly will work with my teen, and can they meet that person first?
- How do you choose the match?
- What do you do when a teen shows up but does not engage?
- What will I hear, and how often?
- What do you do if you see signs of a mental health or safety concern?
- What does it cost?
Ask us the same questions. Our pages on how mentoring works and how we match mentors cover much of it.
What happens after you reach out
- A short assessment. The assessment takes about five minutes. It tells us about your teen, the main goals and what the weekly schedule looks like.
- A free 20-minute intro call. A member of our team hosts the call by video in your browser, weekdays 9 to 5 Pacific. You can also book it directly on the intro call page. We talk through fit, scheduling and cost; we do not publish prices, so cost is reviewed on this call.
- A mentor match within 2 business days. After the call, we match your teen with one dedicated mentor and set the first session. Mentors offer early morning, evening and weekend times.

Common questions
Can a coach really motivate my teenager?
A mentor cannot force motivation, but can help your teen find a goal they care about, break it into small steps and build momentum through steady check-ins. That is usually what has been missing.
What if my teen refuses to talk to a coach?
Many teens start reluctantly. Inviting them to the free intro call as their choice, not a punishment, often helps. A mentor cannot work with someone who will not show up, so we will be honest with you if that is the case.
Could low motivation be depression?
Sometimes. If you notice withdrawal, sleep changes or hopelessness, start with your teen’s doctor or a licensed therapist. A mentor can work alongside that care, never instead of it.
How often does my teen meet with the mentor?
Sessions are usually 60 minutes, weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check-ins between sessions.
Do you work with teens outside Los Angeles?
Yes. Mentoring is by video anywhere in the United States and in person in Los Angeles.
