Online Mentoring in Charleston, South Carolina

Blackburn Mentoring serves Charleston, South Carolina by video. Our team is in Los Angeles, and clients on the peninsula, in Mount Pleasant, Daniel Island, James Island, West Ashley, North Charleston and Summerville meet one dedicated mentor online each week, scheduled in Eastern time. We work with high school students (always with a parent involved), college students and young adults.

A growing region with old roots

Charleston has changed a great deal in a generation. Families who have been here for decades now share the Lowcountry with people who moved in for work at the port, in aerospace and advanced manufacturing, at military installations, in technology and across the large hospitality and tourism economy. Many neighborhoods feel new; the churches and social calendars in others go back a long way.

For teenagers, that can mean two very different experiences side by side. Some grew up here and know everyone. Others arrived in middle school and are still finding their place. Both groups can use an adult outside the family who listens and helps them plan.

Session times from Charleston

Charleston is three hours ahead of our Los Angeles mentors, and that difference holds all year.

Charleston by the numbers

  • Long drives over water. The mean travel time to work in the Charleston-North Charleston metro is 29.4 minutes (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). With bridges and causeways as the only routes between the peninsula, Mount Pleasant, West Ashley and Summerville, a weekly in-person appointment is one more drive. A video session from a bedroom or a parked car at practice is easier to keep.
  • Housing that outpaces first paychecks. The median owner-occupied home is valued at $430,300, with a median household income of $90,307 (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Many young adults who grew up here now rent inland, and a mentor helps them build the savings plan and career steps that make staying possible.
  • High expectations. 42.2% of adults 25 and older in the metro hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Students who would rather start an apprenticeship or a trade sometimes need help making that case to themselves and their families.
  • A relatively young, newcomer-heavy metro. The median age is 38.8 (ACS 2024 1-year, via Census Reporter). Plenty of families relocated for a job, and a mentor gives a teen one steady person through the move.
  • Many young adults are on their own. In South Carolina, 29.6% of adults ages 18 to 34 live with parents, below the 32.9% national rate for 2025 (FinanceBuzz analysis of ACS data, state level). Mentoring for twenty-somethings here often focuses on rent, work and routines.

Weather, seasons and the school year

State law bars South Carolina public schools from opening before the third Monday in August, apart from year-round calendars (S.C. Code 59-1-425), so Charleston-area students return in mid to late August. We suggest starting in late July or early August, when summer jobs wind down and there is time to set goals.

Lowcountry summers are long, hot and humid, and hurricane season runs from June through November. Occasionally a storm closes schools or sends families inland for a few days, and king tides and heavy rain can flood low streets downtown and on the islands. Because sessions are online, they continue from a relative’s house or a hotel as long as there is a connection. Winters are mild, and spring and fall weekends fill with visitors, weddings and events, the busiest weeks for anyone working in restaurants, hotels or on the water.

Common reasons Charleston families call

The student who is capable but drifting

Grades slipped in a hard semester and the student has stopped volunteering information. A mentor helps rebuild the routine around homework, sleep and screens, one week at a time. Our guide on teen procrastination covers the patterns parents usually see first.

The college student close to home or far away

Many local students stay in the region for college, and many leave the state. Either way, the first year brings freedom faster than most students can manage it, and weekly sessions give a student a plan for classes, money and time without a parent having to run it. See college transition mentoring.

The young adult who loves it here but feels stuck

Plenty of people in their twenties want to stay in Charleston and work in restaurants, hospitality or entry-level jobs while they figure out the next step. A mentor helps them decide what they are building toward, then breaks it into steps: a certification, a savings target, a job search routine.

Situations that come up often around Charleston

  • A senior with an offer from a manufacturing apprenticeship who is not sure whether to take it or start college. See how to get an apprenticeship.
  • A teenager working long shifts at a marina or restaurant all summer who has trouble shifting back to school in August.
  • A military family with a high school student who has changed schools more than once.
  • A young adult in hospitality who wants to move into event planning, management or sales and does not know the first step.

How a mentor fits

Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors. The job is steady accountability and practical guidance from someone outside the family. For teenagers, see mentoring for high school students; military families can read mentoring for military families. How online sessions run is explained on our online mentoring page, and mentoring in South Carolina covers the rest of the state.

Common questions

Do you serve Mount Pleasant, Summerville and North Charleston?

Yes. Anyone in the Charleston area can work with us by video, from Daniel Island to Goose Creek, with sessions in local time. In-person mentoring is offered only in Los Angeles.

Can sessions continue during a hurricane evacuation?

Yes, as long as there is a phone or internet connection. A session can run from a relative’s house inland or move to another day, and text check-ins keep the plan alive while the family is displaced.

What time are evening sessions in Charleston on Pacific time?

An evening session at 6:00 to 8:00 pm in Charleston is 3:00 to 5:00 pm for the mentor in Los Angeles. After-school, early-morning and weekend times are available too. We always book in Eastern time.

Do you have mentors in Charleston?

Our team is based in Los Angeles. Charleston clients meet their mentor by video, which also means sessions continue during travel, storms or a semester away.

What if my child is already seeing a counselor?

With the family’s permission, a mentor can coordinate with professionals already involved. Mentoring works alongside counseling; it does not replace it.
