Blackburn Mentoring provides one-on-one mentoring and coaching for teens 13 and up, college students and young adults in Orlando and Central Florida, with every session held by video. We have mentored since 2014; the first step is a free 20 minute intro call, and new clients are matched with a mentor within 2 business days (in person only in Los Angeles). Sessions run on Eastern time, with early morning, evening and weekend times available.
Blackburn Mentoring serves Orlando and Central Florida by video. Our team is in Los Angeles, the only city where we offer in-person sessions, and clients in Winter Park, Windermere, Baldwin Park, Lake Nona, Oviedo, Kissimmee and Lake Mary meet one dedicated mentor online every week, scheduled in Eastern time. We work with high school students alongside their parents, college students, young adults and professionals.
Session times from Orlando
Central Florida is three hours ahead of our mentors on the West Coast, so a session that starts after school or after a shift in Orlando lands in the mentor’s afternoon.
| Slot | Orlando (Eastern) | Mentor (Pacific) |
|---|---|---|
| After school | 4:30 pm | 1:30 pm |
| Between a day shift and dinner | 6:00 pm | 3:00 pm |
| After work | 7:00 pm | 4:00 pm |
| Last evening slot | 8:00 pm | 5:00 pm |
Shift work changes the math here. A young adult who closes at a park or hotel may prefer a late-morning session around 10:00 or 11:00 am Eastern, before heading in, and Saturday or Sunday sessions suit people whose days off move every week. Early mornings before 9:00 am Eastern are limited because of the time difference.
Orlando by the numbers
A handful of published figures explain a lot about the families and young adults who reach out to us from Central Florida.
- The Orlando metro has 196,079 students enrolled in colleges and universities (Data USA, based on U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2024 estimates). That is a very large student population, and many of those students live at home and commute, which makes structure outside the classroom more important.
- The average commute in the metro is 29.2 minutes (Data USA, ACS 2024). Between I-4 and the toll roads, an extra appointment across town can cost an hour; a video session costs none.
- The median household income in the metro is $78,533, and 11.7 percent of residents live below the poverty line (Data USA, ACS 2024). In a service and tourism heavy economy, many young adults are starting out on hourly pay, so budgeting and a path to the next role come up often.
- Across Florida, 36.6 percent of adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents, compared with 32.9 percent nationally (state level, FinanceBuzz analysis of 2024 American Community Survey data). Parents are often in the same house, so we plan how they will stay informed from the first call.

Central Florida’s calendar and weather
Schools in Orange County opened on Aug. 11 in 2026, and Seminole and Osceola opened Aug. 10, the earliest date Florida law allows (district calendars compiled by Florida School Calendar). Summer planning therefore needs to start in June, not late July, and late July is the window to begin mentoring for the fall.
Summers bring heat, humidity and an afternoon thunderstorm almost every day. Hurricane season runs June through November, and a storm can close schools for several days; sessions continue from wherever the family is. Summer and holiday breaks are peak tourist season, which is exactly when teens with park, hotel or restaurant jobs get the most hours and when grades can slip at the start of a new term.
Tourism is only part of the economy. Simulation and defense technology, aerospace work tied to the Space Coast an hour east, health care and a large higher education sector employ many parents, and rocket launches visible from backyards spark real interest in technical careers that do not always require a four-year degree.
Situations Orlando families bring to us
College students near home
Living at home during college can make the first year feel like a continuation of high school, with less structure and more freedom. A mentor helps the student treat college like a job: a schedule, office hours and deadlines on a calendar. See mentoring for college students and, for students who stepped away, mentoring during a semester off.
Young adults working in hospitality
Many people in their twenties here work in parks, hotels and restaurants. Some want to grow into management; others took the job to pay bills and are ready for something else. A mentor helps them choose a direction and break it into steps, from a career change plan to a monthly budget.
Newcomer and bilingual families
Osceola County and the Kissimmee area are home to a large, fast-growing Puerto Rican community, and many families arrived within the last decade. A teen who is strong in Spanish and still building confidence in English-language classes benefits from one steady adult who checks in weekly. Our guide for newcomer families in US high schools covers the basics.
What Orlando families ask us
- How to give structure to a college student who is struggling or has stepped away from school.
- Where a young adult working hospitality shifts should point next.
- What the state merit scholarship requires, and when to start tracking it; see state merit scholarships explained.
- How to schedule sessions around work hours that change every week.
Where a mentor fits
Our mentors do not tutor, provide therapy or act as admissions counselors. The role is a consistent, practical guide outside the family who helps someone follow through. With permission, mentors coordinate with professionals already involved, and if anxiety, depression or substance use comes up, a licensed professional is the right step. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Common questions
Can mentoring sessions in Orlando fit around theme park and hospitality shift work?
Yes. Sessions can be booked late morning before a closing shift, in the evening after a day shift, or on a weekend, and they can move when the schedule changes. Your mentor keeps in touch by text between sessions so a week with a new schedule does not mean losing contact.
Do you help college students in the Orlando area?
Yes. With nearly 200,000 college students in the metro, this is one of our most common Central Florida requests, especially students who live at home and commute. A mentor helps with a weekly schedule, using campus support early and planning internships.
What time are evening sessions in Orlando on Pacific time?
The last regular evening slot is around 8:00 pm Eastern, which is 5:00 pm for your mentor. A 7:00 pm Orlando session is 4:00 pm Pacific.
Is mentoring in Central Florida done by video?
Yes. Our team is based in Los Angeles, and Orlando clients meet their mentor by video with text and phone contact between sessions. In-person sessions are offered only in Los Angeles.
Can sessions continue during a hurricane evacuation?
Yes, as long as there is a device and a connection. Sessions can be moved or shortened when a storm disrupts the week.
Is there a mentor for a teenage son or daughter in Orlando?
Yes. Blackburn Mentoring matches teens 13 and up in Orlando with a dedicated one-on-one mentor who meets them by video, usually weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check-ins in between. Start with a free 20 minute intro call at (888) 305-5422 or online; a mentor is matched within 2 business days. For other options, see how to find a mentor for your son or daughter.
Can a college student from Orlando work with a virtual mentor?
Yes. Hospitality and theme park shift schedules shape many Central Florida households, and video sessions can fit around early or late shifts. The same mentor can continue through school breaks, a move or a semester away. Sessions are booked in Eastern time, and mentors offer early morning, evening and weekend sessions, so a meeting can land before school or work or after a long day. See how virtual mentoring works.
Are there programs for struggling young adults in Orlando?
Yes. Orlando families describe young adults working irregular shifts, or not working, without a plan for what comes next. Blackburn Mentoring works one-on-one by video with young adults who are stuck at home, building daily structure, a plan for work or school and steady follow-through. Start with what can help when an adult son won’t leave the house, compare the main programs for struggling young adults, and read our failure to launch parent guide.
