Mentoring and Coaching in Wilmington, Delaware

Families and young adults in Wilmington, Greenville, Hockessin, Pike Creek and across northern New Castle County can work with a Blackburn mentor by video. Each person gets one dedicated mentor, meets weekly or more often in Eastern time, and has text and phone contact between sessions. Our team is in Los Angeles, so all sessions in Delaware are online.

A small city with an outsized role

Wilmington is the corporate and legal hub of Delaware. Many companies are incorporated here, the state’s business courts are well known, and banking and credit card firms are major employers along with health care and the chemical industry that shaped the region’s history. The Northeast Corridor makes it easy to reach Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington and New York by train.

North of the city, the Brandywine Valley has rolling hills, historic estates and gardens. Suburbs like Greenville and Hockessin are quiet and family oriented. Families here often have ties across state lines in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey.

What families in Delaware ask about

  • A high school student who needs help managing a full schedule of academics and activities.
  • A teen unsure about what comes after graduation and who needs space to explore options.
  • A college student close to home who is struggling with independence.
  • A young professional in finance or law who wants more direction and balance.

Close to many places, still finding your own

One feature of growing up in Delaware is how close everything is: Philadelphia, the beaches, Baltimore and Washington are all within reach. That makes options plentiful, but it can also make it harder for a young person to decide what they want. A mentor helps narrow choices by looking at interests, values and practical factors, then building a plan with weekly steps. Our guide to how to make decisions covers useful methods.

For early-career professionals

Wilmington’s finance, legal and corporate jobs can be demanding. Young professionals often want help with promotions, managing up, workload and routines that leave room for health and friends. A mentor helps set goals, prepare for key conversations and keep life outside work on track. See our guide to work-life balance for young professionals.

When a teenager has a full calendar and no plan

Northern Delaware families often fill the week with sports, music, service and part-time work. Being busy is not the same as being organized, though. A mentor sits down with a student, lays out every commitment on one page, and decides together what gets priority each week. Then the student tries the plan, reports back by text midweek, and adjusts at the next session. Our weekly planner for students shows a simple version of the format.

Scheduling

Delaware is three hours ahead of Los Angeles. A 4 pm session after school is 1 pm for the mentor, and a 7 pm session after work is 4 pm in California. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes on a weekly plan billed week to week or a monthly plan.

Where a mentor helps

A mentor is a consistent outside adult who helps turn goals into action and shares progress with family, with permission. Mentors do not tutor, offer therapy or handle admissions. High school families usually start with mentoring for high school students; working adults fit mentoring for professionals. More is on the online mentoring page and the Delaware mentoring page.

Northern Delaware: the everyday realities for families and young adults

Delaware’s statewide school choice program means families often weigh district schools, charters, magnet programs, technical high schools and parochial options, and the application window falls months before the school year begins. For a teenager, that can mean a long bus ride or a school far from neighborhood friends. The state also has a strong network of technical high schools where students train in a trade alongside academics, and Delaware has offered scholarship help for eligible graduates who attend community college in state, so families are wise to check current rules.

Summers pull many teenagers south. Beach towns on the Delaware coast hire heavily for the season, and older teens and college students often share rentals and work long hospitality shifts from June to August. The rest of the year, Wilmington’s banks and back offices hire young adults into operations and customer roles that can grow into careers or stall. Because the state is so small, plenty of families live in Pennsylvania or Maryland and still center work, school and friendships in New Castle County.

Situations that come up often in Wilmington

  • An eighth grader and parents trying to make sense of the school choice application and which programs fit.
  • A teen heading to a beach job for the summer, sharing a rental with friends and handling money alone for the first time.
  • A young adult in an entry-level banking or operations role who wants to move up and is unsure what training matters.
  • A student who lives across the line in Pennsylvania but whose school, job and friends are all in Delaware.
  • A recent graduate commuting by train to Philadelphia and trying to fit in a life outside work.

Delaware is in Eastern time, so sessions are booked in Eastern hours and held by video; in-person work happens only in Los Angeles. Sessions can run after school or after the train home. Families here may find these useful: free and low-cost community college programs and building a teen summer plan.
