Sessions run on Eastern time, with early morning, evening and weekend times available.
Blackburn Mentoring serves Baltimore and the Maryland suburbs by video. Our team is in Los Angeles, and clients in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Howard County and around Annapolis meet one dedicated mentor online every week, with sessions in Eastern time and text or phone check-ins between them. We work with high school students and their parents, college students, young adults and professionals.
Baltimore families and the pressure of a long school day
Baltimore has a long tradition of independent schools, and in neighborhoods like Roland Park and Guilford and suburbs like Ruxton, Lutherville and Pikesville, many families have a child in one. Howard County, around Columbia and Ellicott City, is known for academically demanding public districts. Either way, students often carry long days, sports and a full load of advanced classes.
What we hear from parents is rarely about intelligence. It is about follow-through, motivation and a teenager who needs to hear the same advice from someone who is not their parent.
Questions to ask before you call anyone
- Is the problem skill (planning, studying) or will (motivation, interest)? Often it is both.
- Is your teenager willing to try one conversation with a mentor?
- What would be different in eight weeks if this works?
- Are other professionals already involved, such as a tutor or counselor, who a mentor should coordinate with?
You do not need clean answers. These are the questions we explore on the free intro call.
Session times from Baltimore
Maryland keeps Eastern time, three hours ahead of the Pacific coast where our mentors work. A Baltimore afternoon is a California lunchtime, so after-school and evening times are easy to hold week after week.
- After school: 4:00 to 6:00 pm Eastern is 1:00 to 3:00 pm Pacific.
- After work: sessions at 7:00 or 8:00 pm Eastern (4:00 or 5:00 pm Pacific) suit someone getting home from a MARC train or a shift at the hospital.
- Early morning: 7:00 am Eastern slots, before the drive down I-95, can be set up with a mentor who starts early.
- Weekends: Saturday and Sunday sessions help families who keep weeknights clear for homework and practices.
Baltimore by the numbers
The Baltimore-Columbia-Towson metro covers the city and Baltimore, Howard, Anne Arundel, Harford, Carroll and Queen Anne’s Counties. The figures below come from its profile on Census Reporter unless noted.
- 38.5 percent of Maryland adults ages 18 to 34 live with their parents (FinanceBuzz analysis of 2024 Census data, state level), above the national figure. For many Maryland families the question is not whether a graduate comes home but how to help them use those years to build independence.
- A median owner-occupied home value of $403,000 in the metro (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024, via Census Reporter). Rowhouse rents in the city cost less than in Washington, so a mentor can help a young adult map out what a first lease in Hampden or Canton would really take.
- 45.3 percent of metro adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024, via Census Reporter). Many students study at a nearby campus and keep living at home, which saves money but can make college feel like thirteenth grade.
- A 30.3 minute average commute (U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2024, via Census Reporter), with plenty of people driving or riding toward Washington. A video session never costs a trip around I-695.
Four seasons, a school calendar and what families ask
Maryland districts generally open in late August and run to mid June; their start dates look more like those of districts to the north than the rest of the South Atlantic (Pew Research Center, 2023). Summers are hot and humid and center on the Chesapeake Bay, with boating, crab feasts and seasonal jobs on the water. Winters bring a few snow and ice days that close schools. We often see families reach out right after first-quarter grades, over Thanksgiving and winter break when college students are home, and in late spring when parents start planning the summer.
Greater Baltimore leans on hospitals, medical research, higher education, the port and logistics, and the corridor toward Washington is full of government and professional services work whose hiring involves background screening and long waits. The questions Baltimore parents ask most: how do you help a young adult living at home become more independent, can sessions happen right after school, and do you work with college students?
Who we work with
For teens, see mentoring for high school students: a parent or guardian can join the intro call, help agree the goals and receive regular progress updates. For people in their twenties, see young adult mentoring; college students and adults decide what gets shared and with whom. Parents of a graduate who has moved back home can read about a mentor for an adult son or daughter. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors. In a crisis, call or text 988.
Situations that come up often in the Baltimore area
- A recent graduate applying for federal jobs who has to stay productive through months of hiring paperwork.
- A teen in Anne Arundel County who spends every summer working on the water and wants that to lead somewhere.
- A young adult choosing between a first rowhouse share in the city and staying with parents in Catonsville to save.
- A college student living at home who has no campus friends and drives straight back after class.

Common questions
Do you meet in person in Baltimore?
No. We have no Baltimore office; clients here meet their mentor by video with text and phone contact between sessions. Face-to-face mentoring is offered only in Los Angeles.
What time are sessions for Baltimore clients?
All sessions are set in Eastern time. A 4:00 pm after-school session is 1:00 pm for a mentor in California, and evening sessions run until about 8:00 pm Eastern. Weekend and early-morning times are possible too.
How do you support young adults living at home in Maryland?
We start with what independence would actually look like: a job or school plan, a savings target, household responsibilities and a realistic move-out date. The mentor checks progress weekly, and with the young adult’s permission, parents get updates that keep conversations at home practical.
Can you work with a student in Howard County or near Annapolis?
Yes. Anyone in Maryland can work with us online, with sessions scheduled in local time, and the mentor stays the same if the student leaves for college in another state.
Can my son in Baltimore work with a mentor online?
Yes. Blackburn Mentoring matches teens 13 and up in Baltimore with a dedicated one-on-one mentor who meets them by video, usually weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check-ins in between. Start with a free 20 minute intro call at (888) 305-5422 or online; a mentor is matched within 2 business days. For other options, see how to find a mentor for your son or daughter.
Is virtual mentoring available in Baltimore?
Yes. Families along the I-95 corridor juggle long commutes in both directions, and video sessions keep the weekly meeting from depending on a drive. The same mentor can continue through school breaks, a move or a semester away. Sessions are booked in Eastern time, and mentors offer early morning, evening and weekend sessions, so a meeting can land before school or work or after a long day. See how virtual mentoring works.
What help is there in Baltimore for a young adult stuck at home?
Maryland families often describe a young adult who came home after college or a lost job and has not found the next step. Blackburn Mentoring works one-on-one by video with young adults who are stuck at home, building daily structure, a plan for work or school and steady follow-through. Start with what can help when an adult son won’t leave the house, compare the main programs for struggling young adults, and read our failure to launch parent guide.
