Yes. Families and young adults anywhere in Kentucky can work with a dedicated Blackburn mentor by video. Kentucky is split between two time zones: the eastern half, including Louisville, Lexington and Northern Kentucky, is on Eastern time, and the western half, including Bowling Green, Owensboro and Paducah, is on Central time. We schedule each session in your local time.
From the Bluegrass to the mountains to the river
Kentucky packs a lot of variety into one state: rolling horse country around Lexington, a big river city in Louisville, suburbs across the Ohio from Cincinnati, Appalachian mountains in the east and farmland and lakes in the west. Roads in the eastern mountains wind slowly, and many western towns are far from a larger city. Video gives a family in Pikeville or Murray the same access to a mentor as one in Louisville.
The main parts of the state
Louisville is the largest metro, with suburbs extending into southern Indiana. Lexington and the surrounding Bluegrass towns such as Versailles, Frankfort, Richmond and Nicholasville form the second hub. Northern Kentucky, including Covington, Newport and Florence, is part of the Cincinnati area. South central Kentucky centers on Bowling Green. Western Kentucky includes Owensboro, Paducah and the lakes region. Eastern Kentucky is Appalachia: Pikeville, Hazard, Ashland and many small mountain communities.
Bourbon, cars, horses and freight
Kentucky’s economy is more diverse than its reputation. Auto manufacturing is a major employer, with large assembly plants and many suppliers. Louisville is home to one of the world’s largest air cargo hubs and a big health care sector. Bourbon distilling has grown into an industry with its own tourism. Thoroughbred breeding and racing anchor the Bluegrass. Agriculture, logistics and state government are significant, and the coal industry that once defined eastern Kentucky has shrunk, leaving communities looking for new paths.
Schools and college in Kentucky
Each Kentucky county has a public school district, and some cities have their own independent districts as well. Louisville and Lexington have well-established Catholic and independent schools. After graduation, students can choose among the state’s public universities, regional campuses, a statewide community and technical college system and a number of private colleges. Many students stay close to home; others leave for Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana or further. Kentucky campuses, for their part, attract students from neighboring states.
What families and young adults bring to a mentor
- A teenager who is bright but unmotivated, or overwhelmed by a full schedule of classes and sports.
- A first-generation college student who needs someone in their corner. Our guide for first-generation college students covers the basics.
- A college student far from home, or one thinking about dropping out.
- A young adult in a small town weighing whether to stay or move to Louisville, Lexington or out of state.
- A professional ready for a promotion or a change of direction.
Where a mentor helps
A mentor meets 30 or 60 minutes by video, weekly or several times a week, sets goals with the client, breaks them into steps and checks in by text or phone between sessions. For teens, a parent joins the intro call and receives updates; see mentoring for high school students and mentoring for families. College students should see mentoring for college students; people in their twenties, young adult mentoring. Mentors are not tutors, therapists or admissions counselors.

Common questions
Is Kentucky on Eastern or Central time for sessions?
It depends on where you live. Louisville, Lexington and the east are Eastern; Bowling Green, Owensboro, Paducah and the west are Central. We book in your local time.
We live in eastern Kentucky, far from any city. Can we do this?
Yes. Everything is by video with text and phone contact between sessions, so a reliable connection is the only requirement.
Can a mentor support a first-generation college student?
Yes. Mentors help with planning, deadlines, campus routines and knowing who to ask for what. They are not admissions or financial aid advisers.
