Online mentoring in Austin gives a college student, recent graduate, young professional or teen one dedicated Blackburn mentor who meets them by video in Central time. Our team is based in Los Angeles. Sessions run weekly or several times a week, with text and phone check-ins between them.
A college town that became a tech city
Austin has always had a large student population, and over the past two decades it has also become a major tech and startup hub. The result is a city with a lot of people in their twenties, a lot of opportunity and a lot of change. Rents and home prices rose quickly, traffic on I-35 and MoPac got worse, and neighborhoods like East Austin and South Congress look very different than they did a decade ago.
For a young person, Austin can feel like the place to be and also like a place where it is easy to drift.
Staying in Austin after graduation
Many students who come for college decide to stay. The move from campus life to a first job, often with roommates and a rising rent, can be bumpier than expected. Young adult mentoring here helps with:
- A job search plan with weekly targets, if the first job has not landed yet
- A real budget that accounts for rent increases and a car
- A daily routine that does not depend on a class schedule
- Deciding between staying, moving home or moving on
Our guide to the first job after college covers the basics.
Current college students
Large universities can make it easy to disappear in a lecture hall, and Austin offers plenty to do instead of studying. College mentoring helps students set a weekly schedule, get to class and office hours, plan for exams, and think through majors and internships. With permission, mentors keep parents informed.
Startups, tech jobs and uncertainty
Working at a startup or in tech can be exciting and unstable at the same time: long hours, shifting priorities and occasional layoffs. Professionals use mentoring to stay organized during a job search, think through a career change, or keep health, sleep and relationships from sliding while work is intense. See accountability coaching.
Westlake, Round Rock and suburban teens
Families in Westlake, Lakeway, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Leander and Pflugerville often have teens in competitive schools with strong athletics, band and activity programs. High school mentoring helps students plan their weeks, start assignments earlier and build independence before college. A parent or guardian joins the intro call, agrees the goals and receives regular updates. Mentors are not tutors or admissions counselors.
Austin in the summer, and the August reset
Central Texas summers are long and hot, and Texas schools usually start in mid-August. For teens, that leaves a short window to reset sleep and routines. For college students home for the summer, it is a chance to work, intern or take a class, if there is a plan. Many families start mentoring in early summer so the plan is in place before the heat breaks and the semester begins. Our guide to a teen summer plan has ideas.
Scheduling and how a mentor helps
Austin is two hours ahead of Los Angeles. A 4:00 pm Central session is 2:00 pm for your mentor, and a 7:00 pm session is 5:00 pm Pacific. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes. If stress turns into anxiety, depression or substance use, a licensed professional is the right step, and mentors work alongside them with permission. In a crisis, call or text 988.
