Teens, college students, young adults and professionals in San Diego, La Jolla and North County can work with a Blackburn mentor entirely by video. Our team is based in Los Angeles and on the same Pacific time. Each client has one dedicated mentor, meets weekly or several times a week, and stays in touch by text and phone between sessions.
A couple of hours up the coast
We are close enough to share your time zone and your sense of Southern California life, but San Diego clients work with us by video. That keeps sessions consistent: no drive on the 5, no parking, no lost afternoon. A 4:00 pm session in Carlsbad is 4:00 pm for your mentor. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes on a weekly or monthly plan.
Military families and frequent moves
San Diego is home to one of the largest concentrations of Navy and Marine Corps personnel in the country, and many local families live with deployments and transfers. A teen may switch schools several times before graduating, and one parent may be away for months at a time. These students often become independent early, and they can also lose continuity in the people who support them.
A video mentor stays the same through a deployment or a move to a new base. Mentoring for military-connected teens often focuses on:
- Keeping school routines steady while a parent is deployed
- Settling into a new school after a transfer
- Building confidence and friendships quickly
- Giving the parent at home regular progress updates and one less thing to manage alone

North County and coastal teens
Families in La Jolla, Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Rancho Santa Fe, Encinitas and Carlsbad often have students in strong public and independent schools, with surf, club sports and busy social lives. The relaxed coastal pace is part of what makes San Diego great, and it can make structure feel optional. High school mentoring helps teens plan their weeks, start work earlier and follow through. A parent or guardian joins the intro call, agrees the goals and receives regular updates. Mentors are not tutors or admissions counselors.
Students and recent graduates
San Diego has a large student population across several colleges and universities, and many graduates try to stay for the weather and lifestyle despite high housing costs. Common goals in young adult mentoring here:
- A job search plan with weekly applications and conversations
- A budget that makes sense against San Diego rent
- Routines that hold up when the beach is always an option
- A clear decision about staying, moving home or relocating for work
Current students can read about college mentoring.
Biotech, science and defense careers
The region’s economy includes a large life sciences cluster around Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley, plus healthcare, defense and tourism. Early careers in research and biotech often involve long lab hours and uncertain funding cycles. Professionals use mentoring to keep goals moving outside work, plan a next step or think through a career change.
What a mentor brings to a San Diego week
San Diego makes it easy to enjoy the day and harder to keep a long-term plan moving. A mentor brings the plan: a standing time, a few weekly goals and someone who checks in. With permission, mentors coordinate with professionals already involved. Where anxiety, depression or substance use comes up, a licensed professional is the right step. In a crisis, call or text 988.
