Blackburn Mentoring gives Coronado students and young adults one dedicated mentor who meets them by video every week and checks in by text between sessions. For military families, the mentor can stay the same through a deployment, a training cycle or a move across the country. For students under 18 a parent can join the free 20 minute intro call, agree the goals and get regular updates.
An island town with a Navy next door
Coronado sits across the bay from downtown San Diego, linked by the San Diego Coronado Bridge, which opened in 1969, and to the south by the Silver Strand. The Navy is a defining presence: Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Amphibious Base Coronado are both part of Naval Base Coronado. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city had 21,094 residents in 2025 and is home to 1,837 veterans, and 65.5% of adults 25 and older hold a bachelor’s degree or higher (American Community Survey, 2020 to 2024).
Coronado runs its own small public school system. Coronado Unified School District enrolled 2,688 students from kindergarten through 12th grade in 2025 to 2026, according to Ed-Data. In a district that size, students who arrive mid year with a military move join classmates who have known each other since kindergarten.
What Coronado families bring to a mentor
- A parent away. When one parent is deployed or training for long stretches, the other carries the whole school week. A mentor takes on the weekly planning conversation with the student so home can be calmer. See mentoring for military families.
- Arriving mid year. New teachers, new portals and a friend group already formed. A mentor helps the student catch up on routines quickly and rebuild a plan.
- Leaving mid year. Orders to a new base can arrive during junior year. Because sessions are by video, the mentor moves with the student and keeps the plan steady across schools.
- Students with big plans. Service academy, ROTC or college applications with long timelines. A mentor helps a student manage the deadlines and the workload; mentors do not write applications or promise admissions. See our junior year guide.
- Young adults and spouses starting careers. A young adult or a military spouse rebuilding work after a move can use a mentor for goals, structure and accountability. See young adult mentoring.
How sessions work from Coronado
Coronado clients meet by video. Our team is based in Los Angeles, a long drive north, and video is what lets the same mentor continue through a move. Sessions fit before school, after practice or in the evening, and mentors offer weekend times. In person meetings take place only in Los Angeles. Families on the mainland may prefer our San Diego and La Jolla page. Families anywhere in Southern California can also see our Southern California areas page.
How to start

Common questions
Can the mentor stay the same if we get orders to move?
Yes. Sessions are by video, so the same mentor continues at the next duty station, anywhere in the country.
Do you meet in person in Coronado?
No. Coronado clients meet by video. In person meetings take place only in Los Angeles.
Can a mentor help during a deployment?
Yes. A mentor gives the student a steady weekly structure and one consistent adult outside the family, and keeps the parent at home updated. Mentors are not therapists; if a student is struggling emotionally, a licensed professional is the right step, and in a crisis, call or text 988.
Do you help with service academy or college applications?
Mentors help students plan and keep up with long application timelines. They do not write applications, act as admissions consultants or promise outcomes.
