Online Mentoring and Coaching in North Dakota

Yes. Families, students and young adults anywhere in North Dakota can work with a dedicated Blackburn mentor by video. Most of the state is on Central time, two hours ahead of our Los Angeles team, while the southwest corner is on Mountain time. We schedule in whichever one you live in, with text and phone contact between sessions.

Why video makes sense on the northern plains

North Dakota is a large state with a small population, and most of it lives in a handful of cities. Between them are long stretches of farmland, prairie and, in the west, the Badlands. Winters are long and can be severe, with stretches when nobody wants to be on the road.

For a family in a small town, the nearest in-person option may be hours away. Online mentoring means one consistent mentor, every week, without the drive or the weather getting in the way.

Fargo, Bismarck and the rest of the map

  • Fargo: the largest city, sharing a metro with Moorhead across the Red River in Minnesota, with health care, technology, agriculture business and higher education.
  • Bismarck and Mandan: the capital, with state government, health care and energy companies.
  • Grand Forks and Minot: regional hubs with Air Force bases nearby and strong ties to farming.
  • Williston, Dickinson and the west: the oil and gas region, where boom and slowdown cycles have reshaped towns more than once.

An economy built on land and energy

Agriculture runs through everything here: wheat, soybeans, sunflowers, canola and cattle, and the businesses that serve them. Oil and gas production in the west made North Dakota one of the leading energy states. Health care, government, defense and a growing technology sector round it out. Some jobs, especially in energy and farming, mean long days or long rotations away from home, which can leave a teenager with less structure than parents would like.

Schools, colleges and leaving home

Many North Dakota districts are small, and some rural high schools graduate a modest class each year. The state has two public research universities, several regional public universities, community and technical colleges, and tribal colleges serving Native communities. Students cross the state line often, especially into Minnesota, and others leave for larger cities in the Midwest or the West.

Going from a small school where everyone knows you to a campus of thousands is a real adjustment, whether that campus is in state or in Minneapolis. A mentor helps with the practical side: a weekly schedule, sleep, money, and asking for help before a semester gets away.

How we work with North Dakota clients

  1. High school students meet a mentor weekly to plan classes, a job, sports and what comes after graduation. A parent joins the intro call and gets regular updates. See mentoring for high school students.
  2. College students get help with routines and follow-through, in state or out. See mentoring for college students.
  3. Young adults deciding whether to stay, return or move away build a plan with real steps. See young adult mentoring.

Common questions

Is North Dakota on Central or Mountain time?

Mostly Central, two hours ahead of Los Angeles. The southwestern part of the state, around Dickinson, is on Mountain time, one hour ahead. We schedule in your local time either way.

We are in a small town with no local options. Can we still do this?

Yes. All you need is a reliable connection and a quiet place. The mentor also checks in by text or phone between sessions.

Can sessions keep going through winter weather?

Yes. Because sessions are online, blizzards and closed roads do not cancel them.
