Online Mentoring and Coaching in Georgia

Yes. Families, students and young adults anywhere in Georgia can work with a dedicated Blackburn mentor by video. Georgia is entirely on Eastern time, three hours ahead of our team in Los Angeles, and every session is scheduled on your clock. That works the same in Buckhead, Savannah, a North Georgia mountain town or a farm community in South Georgia.

Metro Atlanta and everywhere else

Metro Atlanta holds more than half of Georgia’s people, spread across a huge, car-dependent region: the city itself, Buckhead and Midtown, Decatur, Sandy Springs, Marietta, Alpharetta and suburbs that stretch far up GA-400 and I-85. Atlanta traffic is famous for a reason, and a cross-town trip at rush hour can take longer than the session itself.

Outside Atlanta, Georgia is large and varied:

  • Savannah and the coast, with one of the country’s busiest container ports, tourism and the Golden Isles.
  • Augusta, on the South Carolina line, with health care, a large Army installation and a growing cyber sector.
  • Athens, a college town with a strong music scene.
  • Columbus and Macon, regional centers in west and middle Georgia.
  • North Georgia mountains and lakes, and South Georgia farm country, where towns are small and far apart.

An economy built on movement

Georgia’s economy runs on getting people and goods from one place to another. Atlanta’s airport is one of the busiest in the world, the Port of Savannah moves a huge volume of cargo, and logistics and distribution employ many people. Atlanta hosts the headquarters of many large companies and a major cluster in payments and financial technology. Film and television production grew into a major industry. Manufacturing, including automotive and battery plants, is expanding, and agriculture remains essential: poultry, peanuts, pecans, cotton and the famous onions.

For young adults, Atlanta is a magnet, drawing graduates from across the Southeast. A first job in a big, spread-out city brings its own challenges: long commutes, a new social circle and the cost of living alone. See the first job after college.

How students move through school here

Most Georgia students attend county public school systems, some of which are very large, along with city systems, charter schools, and a substantial number of independent and religious schools, especially in metro Atlanta. After high school, the state’s public university system includes research universities, comprehensive and regional universities and state colleges, and a separate technical college system offers career programs statewide. Georgia also has well-known private colleges and a number of historically Black colleges and universities, many of them in Atlanta.

A lottery-funded merit scholarship encourages many students to stay in state, and plenty do. Others leave for neighboring states or farther, and Atlanta’s colleges draw students from across the country.

Where a mentor makes a difference

For high schoolers

Long commutes, big schools and busy activity calendars make it easy for a capable student to fall behind quietly. A weekly session gives them a plan they built, and a parent or guardian is involved from the intro call through regular updates. See mentoring for high school students.

For college students

Keeping grades up to stay eligible for a scholarship, choosing a major and managing time on a big campus are all things a mentor can help with week to week. See mentoring for college students.

For young adults and professionals

Career direction, money and a life that is not swallowed by the commute. See young adult mentoring.

Common questions

What time are sessions for clients in Georgia?

All sessions are in Eastern time. A 5 pm session in Atlanta is 2 pm for a mentor in Los Angeles, so after-school and evening times are easy to set.

Can a mentor help my student keep a scholarship?

Mentors help with the habits behind good grades: planning, routines and follow-through. They are not tutors, and they can work alongside any academic support the student already has.

We live outside metro Atlanta. Is that a problem?

No. Sessions are online, so a family in South Georgia or the mountains gets the same mentor and schedule as one in Buckhead.

Do you meet clients in person in Atlanta?

No. Our team is in Los Angeles, and Georgia clients work with their mentor entirely by video, with text and phone contact between sessions.
