A Life Coach for Professionals: Accountability for Work and Life

A life coach for professionals helps you make clearer decisions and follow through on them: going for a promotion, changing careers, leading a team or getting your time back. At Blackburn you work with one dedicated mentor who helps set goals, break them into weekly steps and check in between sessions, by video anywhere in the United States or in person in Los Angeles.

Why professionals look for a coach

Most professionals who reach out are not in crisis. They are capable people with a full calendar and a short list of things that keep not happening. The goal is clear enough; the space to think about it and the consistency to act on it are what is missing. Common reasons:

What working with a coach looks like

The work is practical. Each session ends with a short list of things you will actually do before the next one, and the next session starts by looking at what happened.

  1. Get specific about the goal. “Be more strategic” becomes “lead the Q3 planning meeting and present one recommendation.”
  2. Find what is in the way. Time, unclear expectations, a difficult relationship, avoidance or simply too many priorities.
  3. Set this week’s steps. Small enough to fit a busy week, concrete enough to check.
  4. Check in between sessions. A quick text or call midweek, so the plan survives a hard Tuesday.
  5. Review and adjust. Keep what works, drop what does not, raise the bar when you are ready.

Common areas professionals work on

Decisions and direction

Laying out options, naming what you actually value, testing assumptions with real conversations, and setting a decision date. If you are weighing more school, see should I go to grad school.

Career growth

Clarifying expectations with your manager, building visibility, preparing for reviews and negotiating pay. Our guide on how to ask for a raise walks through preparation.

Career change and exits

Researching new fields, running informational interviews, building a bridge plan and, when it is time, leaving well; see how to quit a job.

Time, energy and habits

Protecting focus time, setting boundaries on availability, and building routines around exercise, sleep and relationships. Our health and fitness page covers that side, and remote work routine helps if you work from home.

Video nationwide, or in person in Los Angeles

Most professionals meet by video, which fits around work travel and long days. Sessions are scheduled in your local time zone wherever you are in the United States. If you are in the Los Angeles area, in-person sessions are available too; see life coach in Los Angeles. Our guide on online vs in-person mentoring can help you choose.

Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, weekly or several times a week, on a weekly plan billed week to week or a monthly plan. No prices are published; rates are reviewed on the free intro call. For context on what affects price, see how much life coaching costs.

A typical first month

The first session is mostly about the situation: where you are, where you want to be in six months, and what has gotten in the way so far. By the end, you leave with two or three steps for the week. The next few weeks test those steps against your real calendar. Some will be too ambitious and get trimmed; some will turn out to matter more than expected. By the end of the first month, most people have a clearer goal, a short list of weekly habits that support it, and a sense of whether the pace of sessions is right. If you want a more detailed preview, see our guide to your first mentoring session.

What a coach is not

A life coach is not a therapist, a recruiter or a consultant who does the work for you. If stress has turned into burnout, persistent low mood, anxiety or substance use, a licensed professional is the right step, and coaching can sit alongside that care. In a crisis, call or text 988.

Before you hire anyone, it is worth reading questions to ask a life coach and mentor vs coach vs therapist.

Is it a fit?

  • You have a specific goal or decision, even if it is still fuzzy.
  • You do better with someone expecting a result from you each week.
  • You are willing to try things between sessions, not just talk about them.
  • You want one consistent person who learns your situation over time.

If that sounds right, our pages on mentoring for professionals and accountability coaching go into more detail.
