Blackburn Mentoring works with teens, college students, young adults and professionals across the San Francisco Bay Area by video. We are based in Los Angeles, so we share your time zone. Each client has one dedicated mentor, meets weekly or several times a week, and can text or call between sessions.
Same time zone, simple scheduling
Because the Bay Area and Los Angeles are both on Pacific time, there is no conversion to think about. A 4:00 pm session in Palo Alto is 4:00 pm for your mentor. Students often meet right after school, and professionals often pick early evening or a lunch break between meetings. Sessions are 30 or 60 minutes, on a weekly or monthly plan.
Growing up on the Peninsula and in the South Bay
In communities like Palo Alto, Menlo Park, Los Altos, Saratoga and Cupertino, many teens grow up around parents in demanding tech, science and finance careers, and around peers aiming very high. Families and educators in the area have spent years talking openly about student stress and balance. For a high schooler, the issue is rarely ambition. It is usually that everything is treated as urgent at once.
High school mentoring helps a student sort what matters this week from what can wait:
- One planner, one list, reviewed together every session
- Realistic study blocks that leave time for sleep and rest
- Practice asking teachers for help early instead of late
- A calmer conversation at home, because parents get regular updates from the mentor
When stress becomes anxiety or depression, a licensed professional is the right step, and our mentors work alongside them with permission. In a crisis, call or text 988.
East Bay, Marin and the city
The Bay Area is not one place. Families in Oakland, Alameda, Walnut Creek and Lamorinda, students in Mill Valley and elsewhere in Marin, teens in San Jose and the South Bay suburbs, and young people in San Francisco neighborhoods like the Mission, the Sunset or Noe Valley all describe different lives. What they share is high cost of living and long or unpredictable commutes on BART, Caltrain or the bridges. Video sessions remove the commute from the equation entirely.
Young adults and the cost of living
Many Bay Area young adults finish college and move back in with family, or share an apartment with several roommates, because rent is so high. That can be a smart financial choice that still feels like falling behind. Young adult mentoring here tends to cover:
- A savings target and timeline for moving out
- A job search plan with weekly applications and conversations, not just scrolling listings
- Routines that hold when there is no office to go to
- Clear agreements with parents about contribution and independence
Our guide to moving back home after college is a good starting point.
Tech careers and a stop-start economy
The tech industry here has cycles of rapid hiring and sudden layoffs. Professionals tell us the hard part is not only finding the next role but deciding whether they want the same kind of role again. A mentor helps with structure during a search, thinking through a career change, and keeping health and relationships from sliding while work is uncertain.
What a mentor adds
The Bay Area has no shortage of resources. A mentor’s job is to be the steady, personal one: a standing session, a short list of goals, and someone who checks in when the week gets loud. See how online mentoring works.
