Families and young adults in Miami, Palm Beach and the rest of South Florida can work with a Blackburn mentor entirely by video. Our team is based in Los Angeles. Each client has one dedicated mentor, sessions in Eastern time weekly or several times a week, and text and phone contact between sessions, wherever they happen to be that month.
Families with more than one home
South Florida has many families who split the year: winters in Palm Beach or Key Biscayne and summers in the Northeast, or time divided between Miami and another country. Students in these families may change bedrooms, routines and time zones several times a year. Local help often stops at the county line.
A video mentor travels with the student. The same person, the same goals and the same standing session continue from Coral Gables to Connecticut and back, with times adjusted to wherever the student is. For many families this continuity is the main reason they choose online mentoring. Read how we work with families.
Bilingual and international households
Miami is one of the most international cities in the country, and many families speak more than one language at home and have relatives across Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe. Students often move between cultures and expectations every day. A mentor can help with the practical side, from American high school and college deadlines to first jobs, and with permission can share progress updates with the family members the client chooses.
Recently relocated families
In recent years many families have moved to Palm Beach County and Miami from New York, the Northeast and elsewhere, often following finance and business jobs. A move in the middle of high school is hard. A mentor helps a teen:
- Settle into a new school and its expectations
- Find activities and friendships quickly
- Keep grades steady through the transition
- Build independence as family routines reset
High school mentoring always involves a parent or guardian, who joins the intro call, agrees the goals and receives regular updates. Mentors are not tutors or admissions counselors.
College students and Florida scholarships
Many Florida students attend in-state universities, where scholarship programs such as Bright Futures carry academic requirements to keep. Others leave for colleges in the Northeast and face their first real winter. Either way, college transition mentoring helps a first-year student build a weekly schedule, use campus resources early and stay on track with the grades their plans depend on.
Young professionals in Brickell and beyond
Brickell, Wynwood, Edgewater and downtown West Palm Beach are full of young professionals in finance, real estate, hospitality and tech. The social life is constant, the weather invites it, and the cost of living has climbed. Young adult mentoring here often focuses on:
- A budget that accounts for high rent and an active social life
- Routines for sleep, fitness and focus
- Career planning beyond the current job
- Keeping personal goals in view when every night has a plan
Hurricane season and keeping continuity
From June through November, storms can close schools, send families to stay with relatives or cut power for days. Because sessions are by video and phone, mentoring can move with the family instead of pausing. Afterward, a mentor helps a student rebuild the routine quickly.
Session times and how a mentor helps
Miami and Palm Beach are three hours ahead of Los Angeles. An after-school session at 4:00 pm Eastern is 1:00 pm for your mentor; a 7:00 pm session is 4:00 pm Pacific. With permission, mentors coordinate with professionals already involved. If anxiety, depression or substance use is part of the picture, a licensed professional is the right step.
